SAP, AWS deepen partnership with focus on European Sovereign Cloud

SAP and Amazon Web Services are strengthening their alliance with a new initiative to place SAP’s Sovereign Cloud capabilities on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. Backed by Amazon’s planned €7.8 billion investment, the project reflects how cloud providers are recalibrating to meet Europe’s growing focus on digital sovereignty and regulatory compliance.

The first AWS European Sovereign Cloud region will open in Brandenburg, Germany by late 2025. Unlike AWS’s traditional regions, this one will run under independent European governance. As a result, it aims to serve public sector institutions and regulated industries that must comply with strict data residency and operational independence rules.

SAP will contribute its Business Technology Platform and Cloud ERP to the rollout. The services cater to the handling of confidential information and the systems of the enterprises, which are in line with the regulations of the European Union.

Both sets of executives presented the alliance as an answer to customer needs. According to Thomas Saueressig, SAP Executive Board Member for Customer Services and Delivery, the corporate idea of the cloud has evolved to flexibility as the main requirement, still with an emphasis on the control of the data. On the other hand, David Brown, Vice President of Compute and Machine Learning at AWS, said that the move gives more alternatives to customers for handling regulatory requirements while keeping up with the technology.

The collaboration builds on a 16-year relationship between SAP and AWS and extends sovereign services already available in markets including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and India. The situation is quite different when it comes to the continent of Europe. That area features multiple overlapping regulatory frameworks and a greater emphasis on the protection of personal data.

According to observers of the industry, the issue of sovereignty has changed from being a mere secondary concern to a primary requirement for organizations in Europe. By moving to integrate SAP’s Sovereign Cloud with AWS’s sovereign infrastructure, the companies are attempting to define how security, compliance, and innovation can move forward together in Europe’s evolving cloud market.
