Retail cloud spending set to nearly quintuple within decade

Retailers spent close to $48.7 billion on cloud platforms in 2025. New market research circulating this week puts that number at somewhere near $238 billion by 2035. That jump looks like a typo at first glance. It isn’t. The projection works out to a compound annual growth rate above 17 percent, sustained for almost ten straight years, the kind of number that analysts often revise downward once reality sets in. This one might hold up anyway.

Part of the appeal is obvious once you think about what these platforms actually replace. A lot of retailers still run separate systems for customer data, inventory, and supply chain logistics, cobbled together over years. None of it talks to each other particularly well. One unified cloud platform fixes that mess, at least on paper, and apparently enough retailers believe the pitch to drive numbers like these.

AI is doing a good chunk of the heavy lifting here too. Machine learning-based demand forecasting can supposedly cut forecasting errors by half and shave around 10 percent off inventory costs, numbers that sound almost too clean but show up often enough in industry reports to take somewhat seriously. Retailers are also using AI for personalized marketing and real-time stock tracking, and in some cases they’re even letting it decide store layouts.

Right now, software-as-a-service options dominate, holding 58 percent of the market in 2025, mostly because retailers don’t want to deal with the upfront cost of building infrastructure themselves. Public cloud deployments are growing fastest of any category, leaning on easier scaling and simpler integration with whatever digital tools a retailer already has running.

North America still leads overall, with roughly 39 percent of global market share, thanks to widespread adoption among big chains already running omnichannel setups. But Asia-Pacific is closing that gap quickly, with growth north of 21 percent a year, fueled largely by China’s rapid e-commerce expansion.

None of this comes without friction. Data security worries and the genuine headache of merging old legacy systems with new cloud platforms remain real obstacles, especially for retailers operating across borders with wildly different privacy rules. Still, the direction here seems pretty locked in.
