Microsoft just switched on its fourth cloud region in India, and on paper, Hyderabad looks like the company’s boldest India bet yet. Three availability zones, mechanical cooling that barely touches groundwater, and heavyweight customers like HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finserv already signed on. It’s part of a $20.5 billion investment push, and Microsoft is framing the region as something bigger than domestic infrastructure. The pitch is that Hyderabad becomes a compute hub for the wider region, not just for India.
Here’s the catch nobody’s really talking about. Microsoft is banking part of that regional ambition on a new subsea cable system linking India, Malaysia, and Singapore, a 3,600-kilometer line expected to land in Machilipatnam and South Chennai. It won’t go live until 2029. Hyderabad is running today. The cable that would actually carry that promised regional traffic is four years out.
That gap matters more than it sounds. A cloud region can have all the compute in the world, but if nobody has built the pipes moving data to Southeast Asia yet, the region handles most of its work for domestic customers in the meantime. Existing networks will carry whatever regional traffic shows up between now and 2029, whatever that ends up looking like.
None of this makes the Hyderabad launch hollow. Local data residency, sector-specific compliance tools, and confidential computing options genuinely matter for Indian banks and regulated industries navigating the Digital Personal Data Protection framework. But sovereignty isn’t just about where servers sit. Encryption key control and access governance carry just as much weight, and Microsoft’s own materials are careful to note customers still have to verify their own compliance.
What Hyderabad really shows is how the industry builds AI infrastructure now: ahead of certainty, ahead of full connectivity, and sometimes years ahead of the networks meant to justify the investment. Microsoft has the compute in place. Whether Hyderabad becomes a true regional hub or stays a very large domestic region likely comes down to a cable that engineers have not laid yet.
