Microsoft deepens digital roots in Malaysia with new cloud region, AI push

Microsoft launched its first Malaysia cloud region, Malaysia West, in Greater Kuala Lumpur. It not only increases Microsoft’s presence in the region but also meets the growing demand for local processing of data and artificial intelligence capability. Microsoft has equipped the region with three availability zones and provides access to Azure, Microsoft 365, as well as storage, security, and data analytics services.

Significantly, the launch will help achieve Malaysia’s national digital agenda. As described by Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo, the facility will enable the country’s transition yet higher up the value chain, with more sophisticated technologies becoming more readily available to businesses.
With enhanced performance and latency, organizations can now create faster and more secure systems locally.

Some of the major players already have the setup, including PETRONAS, SIRIM Berhad, and TNG Digital. Microsoft expects many more to join, particularly as digital transformation becomes more and more critical. Significantly, IDC estimates the potential contribution of the region to the Malaysian economy at approximately $10.9 billion over four years, with an estimated 17% of the contribution directly from Malaysia West. Microsoft plans to establish over 37,000 new career opportunities, including nearly 6,000 roles for specialist IT professionals.

At the same time, Microsoft launched its BINA AI Malaysia program in AI Tour Kuala Lumpar. As part of the program, it will establish a National AI Innovation Centre with the aim of building local capacity and accelerating real-world implementations of AI. It has already partnered with EY, PETRONAS, and the Ministry of Digital.

Microsoft’s AIForMYFuture program, launched in December 2024, has already certified over 400,000 people. It will certify 800,000 Malaysians by 2025, far before a data economy. Overall, Microsoft’s cloud effort and AI initiative show more commitment to powering Malaysia’s digitalization—not just in infrastructure, but by continued investment in human capital and innovation.
