KT Cloud just finished deploying a public cloud environment built on its own next-generation platform, and South Korean government agencies are first in line to use it.
The platform, called kt cloud PLATFORM, runs virtual machines and containers inside a single environment, built on OpenStack architecture layered on top of Kubernetes. That combination gives public-sector organizations a way to manage cloud resources and security policies through one dashboard rather than juggling separate tools for different workload types. Switching between environments has traditionally been one of the more frustrating parts of government IT, and KT Cloud is betting a unified interface cuts down that friction considerably.
The architecture behind the service also takes disaster recovery seriously, which matters more for government agencies than for most other customers. KT Cloud built a dual-layer redundancy setup linking Seoul and North Gyeongsang Province roughly 200 kilometers apart, alongside a shorter-distance configuration connecting two Seoul locations about 30 kilometers from each other. If one data center runs into trouble, services automatically shift to alternate regions or availability zones without interruption, meeting the high-availability standards Korean government procurement typically demands.
AI infrastructure comes bundled into the same platform. Public-sector customers can train and run AI models without moving between separate environments, scaling compute resources up or down depending on workload. That capability sits inside a cloud environment certified under South Korea’s Cloud Security Assurance Program, a requirement for government adoption that most foreign cloud providers have found difficult to navigate.
Kim Bong-kyun, KT Cloud’s CEO, said the company plans to use its public-sector track record as a foundation for eventually expanding the platform into the private enterprise market. Essentially, the government deployments serve as a proving ground before KT Cloud goes after corporate clients with the same technology.
The company is also hosting a webinar on July 7 covering cloud technology trends and its service portfolio, giving potential customers a closer look before committing to anything.
