IREN just bought 490 megawatts of Spanish power to fuel its AI cloud expansion into Europe

IREN has closed its acquisition of Spain’s Nostrum Group, and the company did not disclose what it paid. That omission barely matters compared to the number it did disclose: roughly 490 megawatts of secured grid-connected power, now under the Sydney-based AI cloud operator’s control as its first European foothold for AI cloud infrastructure.

Power has quietly become the actual bottleneck for AI cloud providers, more so than the chips themselves in many markets. Companies can order and receive GPUs faster than a new substation can clear permitting, which means companies racing to expand AI cloud capacity increasingly compete over grid connections rather than processor allocations. IREN’s move into Spain reflects that shift directly, positioning the company to offer AI cloud services backed by power it already controls rather than power it hopes to secure later.

Nostrum, formally Ingenostrum, S.L., brings more than just power access. The company contributes a local team of over 50 employees spanning development, engineering, construction, and operations, and that team now supports IREN’s broader AI cloud buildout. That matters considerably, since AI cloud expansion in Europe runs through permitting offices, municipal planning boards, and grid operators who move at their own pace regardless of how quickly a parent company wants to scale.

Spain has become an increasingly attractive entry point for AI cloud infrastructure specifically because of its renewable power availability and fiber connectivity. IREN is hardly the first AI cloud operator to notice this, but securing 490MW of already-connected capacity puts it ahead of competitors still negotiating grid access from scratch for their own AI cloud regions.

The acquisition does carry real execution risk. IREN will run Nostrum under its own brand rather than as an independent regional unit, signaling full integration into IREN‘s AI cloud operations rather than a loose partnership. When central management absorbs a local team, it always risks losing the ground-level knowledge that made the deal valuable, including which municipalities move slowly and which grid milestones tend to be fragile.

For the broader AI cloud sector, this deal reinforces something increasingly obvious. Providers that secure power, sites, and fiber connectivity first stand to shape how much AI cloud capacity actually exists across Europe in the years ahead.
