Indian insurer Niva Bupa moves core systems to Oracle Cloud

Niva Bupa runs insurance for millions of people across India, and until now, a chunk of that ran on servers sitting in its own data centers. That’s changing. The health insurer is moving its core policy administration systems onto Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, a shift the company is calling central to its broader technology modernization push.

Niva Bupa has been around since 2008, selling health, travel, and related insurance to individuals, families, and businesses through digital channels and partner networks nationwide. Growth brings its own problems though, and as customer numbers and transaction volume climbed, the infrastructure running policy administration started feeling the strain. Scaling that kind of system on-premises gets expensive and slow in ways cloud infrastructure generally doesn’t.

Dhiresh Rustogi, the company’s chief technology officer, said the migration ties directly into Niva Bupa’s goal of making quality healthcare more accessible through insurance people can actually rely on. Simplifying the tech stack and automating infrastructure tasks, he said, should free up teams to spend less time on maintenance and more on building things. He also mentioned faster product launches as a benefit, and floated AI as something the company wants to explore next, for customer experience and internal decision-making both.

What’s actually changing under the hood: OCI consolidates Niva Bupa’s environment and automates monitoring, patching, and scaling, work that used to require more hands-on attention. Data security and governance get a boost too. And because OCI scales elastically, Niva Bupa doesn’t have to overprovision for peak load the way it might have needed to on fixed on-premises hardware.

Vivek Gupta, who heads Oracle India’s Technology Cloud division, connected the deal to a wider trend across Indian insurance, where he said companies increasingly need cloud infrastructure that’s secure, scalable, and doesn’t break the budget. He described OCI as giving Niva Bupa a platform built to hold up under pressure while leaving room for whatever comes next.

At a company handling this much customer data, a move like this isn’t flashy. It’s closing a gap between old infrastructure and what running insurance at real scale actually demands, with AI sitting somewhere down the road once the basics are sorted.
