IBM strengthens hybrid cloud, AI strategy with Major $11B Confluent deal

IBM’s latest acquisition effort is steering the company deeper into the data movement race that has grown central to modern AI systems. In an agreement valued at eleven billion dollars, IBM plans to buy Confluent, a firm known for technology that manages large volumes of data as it moves through enterprise systems in real time. The deal signals a shift toward tighter control of the data pipelines that feed emerging AI workloads, a priority that has gained urgency as businesses push to modernize their infrastructure.

According to people familiar with the discussions, the two companies first explored the idea over the summer during informal partner conversations. Those early exchanges eventually led Confluent to open a formal bidding process, with IBM securing the agreement. Once the deal closes, IBM Software expects Confluent co founder Jay Kreps to join the division and report to Rob Thomas, reflecting the strategic role this acquisition plays in the company’s broader software push.

Much of IBM’s current direction has centered on building out a cloud and data platform that can carry the strain of artificial intelligence models, including newer agentic and generative systems. Confluent’s tools, used by many large enterprises to move and process constantly streaming information, offer a foundation that IBM expects to position as core to an updated data stack for AI workloads.

IBM’s leadership has long leaned on acquisitions to accelerate shifts in its portfolio, including its purchase of Red Hat in 2019 and HashiCorp last year. Analysts say the move for Confluent fits the pattern of bolstering capabilities that make hybrid architectures more adaptable to AI. Market‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ reaction is also in line with that opinion as Confluent shares have gone up significantly after the announcement.

Although the agreement has received the green light from the two boards, it still needs the approval of regulatory authorities and a vote by Confluent shareholders. Shareholders who control most of the voting rights have consented to the deal, and the companies expect to complete it by the middle of 2026.
