Hivelocity brings one-click app installs to bare-metal servers

Hivelocity just added something bare-metal hosting has needed for a while: a way to skip the hours of manual setup that usually follow buying a server. The company’s new App Store, built into its myVelocity portal, lets customers deploy more than 30 applications automatically during purchase or reload, instead of installing everything by hand afterward.

The problem it’s solving is a familiar one for anyone who’s provisioned dedicated servers. The hardware itself shows up fast, but turning it into something actually usable, installing packages, checking dependencies, applying basic security settings, can eat hours even for straightforward deployments. Hivelocity says most App Store installs finish within 10 to 15 minutes, and using the feature costs nothing extra.

How much this helps depends heavily on where a team already stands. Smaller infrastructure teams, managed service providers, and developers without a proper provisioning pipeline will likely feel the biggest shift in how quickly they bring new environments online. Larger enterprises already running infrastructure-as-code and standardized images, on the other hand, probably gain little beyond a faster path to quick testing.

A number of the catalog’s applications also come with security rules and hardening baked in from the start. That’s a real advantage in one specific sense: teams repeat manual security configuration across servers constantly, and that repetition creates room for mistakes, especially when they’re deploying unfamiliar software under time pressure. Still, preconfigured settings don’t substitute for actual security policy. Customers still need to understand what Hivelocity applies, whether it lines up with their compliance requirements, and how they’ll patch the software going forward.

This fits a pattern playing out across the bare-metal and colocation space more broadly. Public cloud providers spent years turning infrastructure into APIs and templates, and dedicated hardware vendors now face real pressure to close that gap if they want developers to keep treating bare metal as programmable infrastructure rather than a slower, more hands-on alternative.

One-click installation only goes so far, though. Networking, monitoring, backups, and long-term maintenance still have to happen after deployment, and templates need upkeep as dependencies and security guidance shift over time. Getting a server running fast is one thing. Keeping it running well is a separate job entirely.
