FalconStor extends on-demand cloud recovery testing to IBM Power shops

FalconStor has launched a cloud-based tool that answers a question most companies would rather not ask out loud: if a cyberattack hit tomorrow, would the backups actually work?

The new Cloud Clean Room runs entirely inside IBM Cloud, spinning up a temporary, isolated copy of a company’s IBM Power systems, running a full recovery test on it, and confirming the data comes back clean, all without touching production systems or building permanent test infrastructure on-premises. Once the test finishes, the cloud environment gets torn down completely, so nothing from that test carries over and creates a new attack surface later.

That’s the real shift here. Recovery testing used to mean maintaining a physical standing replica environment on-site, something companies had to secure, patch, and pay for year-round just so it would be ready when needed. By moving that entire process into the cloud and building it on demand instead, FalconStor removes the need for dedicated hardware or a permanent footprint altogether. The infrastructure exists only for the length of the test.

Research from HyperFRAME backs up why that matters. The firm found that 91% of organizations treat cyber resilience as a priority, yet only 30% feel confident their systems would recover quickly after an attack or major cloud-based data loss event. Companies have spent heavily on backup tools, but few have a reliable, repeatable way to prove those backups hold up under real pressure.

“FalconStor’s Cloud Clean Room focuses on enabling validated recovery through testing and documentation,” said Don Gentile, an analyst at HyperFRAME Research, adding that repeatable cloud-based tests paired with documented proof let organizations check their recovery plans actually work.

The tool launches as a cloud add-on to Habanero, FalconStor’s existing offsite backup service for IBM i, IBM Power, and tape environments, so customers already using Habanero can start running validated recovery tests on IBM PowerVS without hiring cloud specialists or learning IBM Cloud themselves. Each test also generates documentation that satisfies regulatory frameworks like DORA, FFIEC, and PCI-DSS.

CEO Todd Brooks framed the launch as a starting point, saying FalconStor built the Cloud Clean Room as a broader cloud infrastructure layer that other software vendors and service providers could eventually license and build their own managed offerings on top of.
