Ex-bitcoin miner delivers Microsoft’s first AI cloud site

A company that used to mine bitcoin in the Texas desert just handed Microsoft the first piece of a $9.7 billion AI computing deal, and the timing says a lot about where the crypto mining business actually went.

IREN calls the deployment Horizon 1. It’s a 50-megawatt, liquid-cooled facility at the company’s Childress, Texas campus, built to run Nvidia’s newest GB300 chips for Microsoft’s cloud workloads. Three more phases are coming later this year, and together the four will add up to 200 megawatts of AI capacity under the five-year agreement the two companies signed in November 2025.

On top of that, Nvidia gave IREN its Exemplar Cloud designation for the site, a label the chipmaker hands to providers that clear its bar for performance and reliability.

“Delivering Horizon 1 demonstrates the strength of our vertically integrated model and our ability to execute complex AI infrastructure projects at speed and scale,” IREN co-founder and co-CEO Daniel Roberts said in a statement.

What’s easy to miss in the announcement, though, is how much this looks like a pivot rather than a plan. IREN mines bitcoin. For years, it built out power hungry data centers for that purpose, and eventually watched AI companies show up needing exactly the kind of electrical capacity and cooling infrastructure it already had. Because of that overlap, IREN is now chasing 480 megawatts of AI cloud capacity by the end of 2026 and 1.2 gigawatts by 2027.

Still, none of that buildout is cheap. In June, IREN secured a $3.65 billion debt package, backed by the Microsoft contract itself, to help cover $5.81 billion in GPU spending. As a result, Fitch rated the debt A, and DBRS rated it A(low), both investment grade.

Even so, investors reacted mildly. IREN shares climbed 2.6% to $45.22 Monday afternoon after touching $46.50 earlier in the day, but the stock is up less than 6% for the year overall, a modest gain given how large the Microsoft deal actually is.

Meanwhile, IREN isn’t the only bitcoin miner making this jump. Several of its peers are quietly converting mining rigs and power contracts into AI infrastructure, betting that the industry’s appetite for compute will outlast whatever happens to crypto prices next.
