Equinix bare metal cloud is officially gone, leaving customers mid-cleanup

Equinix Metal went dark yesterday, and for any customer who didn’t finish their cleanup in time, today is an uncomfortable morning.

The shutdown closes a chapter that started when Equinix acquired bare metal provider Packet earlier this decade, betting that automated physical servers sitting close to its interconnection network would appeal to hybrid cloud builders. The bet never quite paid off the way the company hoped, and by late 2024 Equinix had already signaled that Metal was running out of time.

What made the June 30 deadline tricky wasn’t moving servers. It was everything attached to them. Customers needed to remove IP addresses, virtual connections, and VLANs before the cutoff, or risk paying for resources that lingered after compute disappeared. Equinix permanently wiped any servers still present at shutdown. Owner-level console access survives until December 31, 2026, but only for reviewing account history and pulling invoices. Support ends even sooner, on September 30, 2026, leaving account teams as the last escalation option.

Several competitors spent months openly courting displaced Metal customers, including OVHcloud, Latitude.sh through Megaport, and OpenMetal. Customers simply looking for another bare metal provider found switching relatively straightforward. Those who chose Metal specifically because it sat close to Equinix Fabric connections and specific network routes faced a more involved problem recreating that surrounding architecture somewhere else.

Compliance adds another dimension that infrastructure transitions often overlook. Teams now need to document what they deleted, confirm what remains billable, verify which network links still run active, and demonstrate data removal across security and procurement stakeholders. It is unglamorous work, but skipping it tends to create problems that surface months later during audits.

As for Equinix itself, the Metal closure fits a clear strategic shift. The company has been pouring investment into Fabric Intelligence, a Distributed AI Hub concept for edge inference, and geography-aware connectivity tools. That is a business built around controlling the network fabric that connects infrastructure, not renting out physical servers. Equinix decided those two businesses belong in different hands, and as of today, that decision is final.
