Dell’s “not-quite-private” cloud signals a shift toward stack-agnostic infrastructure

At its annual tech summit this week, Dell introduced something that walks and talks like a private cloud—but isn’t exactly one. Instead, it’s a platform for building private clouds across Dell hardware, using software stacks from VMware, Nutanix, and Red Hat, without locking customers into a single ecosystem. The catch? Dell’s calling it “disaggregated infrastructure,” and it just might be a sign of bigger shifts in enterprise cloud thinking.

With its new Automation Platform, Dell claims it can spin up a functioning private cloud in just a couple of hours, slashing setup steps by as much as 90 percent. Users can apply validated blueprints to Dell’s existing servers and storage, combining flexibility with consistency. While different cloud stacks can’t share a single node, they can coexist across larger fleets with centralized management.

In a post-Broadcdom VMware world, Dell’s move may reflect the mounting discomfort with rigid hyperconverged platforms. Interestingly, VMware vSphere is supported, but not VMware Cloud Foundation—Broadcom’s new preferred bundle. That absence feels more intentional than incidental, especially as Dell’s roadmap promises more stack options later this year.

The new platform also doubles as a subtle statement: legacy architecture isn’t going away, but it doesn’t need to stay so tightly coupled. Analyst Keith Townsend called the initiative “a young vision” for a modular future, hinting that Dell is laying the groundwork for users looking to ease away from VMware’s orbit.

Elsewhere at the conference, Dell also leaned into edge computing with tools for VM backup, load balancing, and migration—even on non-Dell hardware. On the hardware side, it unveiled AI-optimized servers, cooling systems with real-time leak detection, and a surprisingly potent AI laptop.

It all suggests Dell is working to untangle complexity—not just with tools, but with a philosophy that lets users mix, match, and evolve at their own pace.
