Crusoe raises $3.9B, but most of its capacity isn’t built yet

Crusoe just closed a $3.9 billion Series F round at a $30.9 billion valuation, and the number that should give investors pause isn’t the raise itself. It’s the gap sitting underneath it: Crusoe holds more than 6 gigawatts of contracted capacity, but less than a sixth of that, just over 1 gigawatt, is actually operational right now.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A signed contract for a gigawatt of AI infrastructure is not the same thing as a gigawatt of infrastructure actually delivering power to GPUs. Getting from one to the other means lining up electricity, transmission lines, construction crews, cooling systems, accelerators and paying customers, all on overlapping timelines that rarely cooperate. Crusoe reports more than $140 billion in contracted value across its platform, a genuinely enormous figure, but contracted value sitting on paper isn’t cash in the bank, and it definitely isn’t compute a customer can actually rent.

Crusoe’s answer to that gap is vertical integration, and it’s an expensive one. The company doesn’t just operate cloud infrastructure anymore. It builds data center campuses, manufactures its own modular systems, and even produces electrical equipment like switchgear and copper busbar at a facility in Tulsa. That reduces exposure to supply chain delays that might otherwise stall a project even after land and customers are already secured. It also means Crusoe now carries manufacturing operations on top of the usual economics of running cloud infrastructure, a very different risk profile than a company that simply rents out GPUs.

The Perplexity partnership shows where this strategy is actually going. Rather than supplying compute for a single stage of AI development, Crusoe wants to own the entire workload, training on dedicated Nvidia GB300 clusters through to production inference, inside one relationship. That simplifies things for customers upfront, but it also deepens dependency. Moving away later isn’t as simple as switching to another GPU cluster once tooling and capacity planning become platform-specific.

Crusoe‘s board additions this round, pulling in leadership from cloud finance, hyperscale data centers and industrial energy infrastructure, suggest the company knows exactly how complicated this next phase is going to get. The financing removes one obstacle. It doesn’t energize a single additional megawatt on its own.
