AIG just rolled out an insurance product built around a fairly simple idea: when your cloud provider goes down, you should not have to wait months to collect. The new Parametric Cloud Outage Solution adds a layer of cyber coverage specifically for business interruption losses tied to cloud outages and provider downtime, whether that’s core infrastructure, a SaaS platform, or some other cloud-based service going dark.
The parametric structure is what sets this apart from traditional coverage. Instead of filing a claim and waiting for adjusters to calculate actual damages, the policy pays out automatically once predefined conditions trigger it, based on a formula that factors in how long the outage lasted and its likely financial impact. Coverage kicks in after a two-hour waiting period, and notably, policyholders face no monetary retention after that window closes, so they absorb none of the loss before the payout starts.
The timing lines up with how dependent businesses have become on cloud infrastructure generally. Synergy Research Group found that global enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure hit $129 billion in the first quarter of 2026 alone, up 35% from the year before, the fastest growth rate the sector has seen since 2021. As more companies run critical operations through cloud services, a short outage carries a lot more weight than it used to.
Tracie Grella, AIG’s Global Chief Underwriting Officer for Cyber Risk Insurance, framed the product around speed, arguing that faster access to funds after a disruption gives businesses more confidence to respond without waiting on a drawn-out claims process.
AIG built the underlying formula in partnership with Parametrix, a firm that monitors more than 750 data centers worldwide and tracks over 9,000 technology providers across SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS categories. That monitoring infrastructure essentially makes the parametric trigger possible in the first place, since the payout depends on having reliable, real-time visibility into whether an outage actually happened and how severe it was.
The coverage is currently available in the US as an endorsement for eligible AIG cyber insurance clients, giving them the option to bundle cloud outage protection alongside their existing cyber policy rather than managing separate coverage.
