A seven-month-old startup just signed a $10 billion computing deal

A startup that didn’t exist eight months ago just signed a six-year, $10 billion contract to supply Nvidia-powered computing power. The deal itself is a small story. What it points to is a bigger one.

Volta Infra, founded seven months ago, says the agreement will deliver computing capacity from a Bitdeer-operated data center in Norway, running on Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips. Bloomberg reported the customer is Anthropic, though Reuters said it couldn’t independently confirm that, and Anthropic declined to comment when asked. Whoever the counterparty turns out to be, the contract itself hints at something bigger happening in how AI companies lock down compute.

Volta isn’t betting on just one deal, either. The company raised $300 million across seed and Series A rounds at a $2.4 billion valuation, and separately launched a $5 billion infrastructure program with asset manager Azora to fund more sites. The Norway facility runs at 133 megawatts, and Volta says it already has a pipeline of more than a gigawatt of near-term power capacity across North America and Europe.

What actually makes this worth watching isn’t the headline number. It’s the structure underneath it. So far, AI infrastructure has mostly grown through one-off GPU orders, purchases tied to whatever a company needs that quarter. A six-year capacity agreement tied to a specific site looks nothing like that. Instead, it behaves more like a real infrastructure project, with contracted cash flows lenders can actually underwrite rather than guessing at quarter-to-quarter demand.

That predictability matters for financing. Pre-selling capacity before a site even opens lowers funding risk for operators like Volta and lets them move faster when adding new locations. It also suggests that buyers now see power and data center space as scarce enough to lock up years ahead rather than wait around for spot availability.

Regardless of whether anyone ever confirms the Anthropic connection, the shift toward long-term compute contracts looks like the real story, and it deserves close attention as more players pour capital into AI infrastructure.
