Scaleway grows its cloud with HPC, heat recovery tech

Scaleway, the French cloud provider owned by telecom group Iliad, has bought Qarnot, a high-performance computing company with an unusual specialty: capturing the heat its servers produce and piping it into nearby buildings instead of just venting it into the air.

The deal folds a dedicated HPC business into Scaleway’s cloud platform, giving it a computing tier built for simulation-heavy work, aerospace design, automotive testing, financial risk modeling, that standard cloud instances typically aren’t built to handle. It’s a deliberate expansion beyond the virtual machines, storage, and GPU capacity most European cloud providers compete on.

But the heat recovery technology is the part that stands out. Qarnot’s liquid-cooling systems reportedly capture up to 95% of the heat its cloud servers generate and redirect it into district heating networks or industrial facilities, effectively turning a cloud data center into a secondary heat source for whatever sits nearby.

That idea sounds better on paper than it plays out everywhere. District heating networks exist across much of continental Europe, but not universally, and building an actual heat reuse project means coordinating investment timelines between cloud customers, utilities, and municipalities that don’t always move at the same pace. Qarnot already runs deployments feeding municipal heating systems and commercial buildings, though, so Scaleway isn’t buying an untested concept into its cloud stack.

The acquisition also reinforces Scaleway’s core pitch to cloud buyers: infrastructure that stays under European jurisdiction, away from US legal reach. That argument keeps gaining traction as banks, defense contractors, and healthcare organizations bring legal teams into cloud procurement conversations that used to be purely technical. Still, sovereignty alone doesn’t automatically pull cloud workloads away from the hyperscalers, which continue to offer scale and software ecosystems European providers can’t fully match yet.

Qarnot’s client list, which includes MaiaSpace, Alpine Racing, ATR Aircraft, and Natixis, shows the kind of engineering-heavy customer now flowing into Scaleway’s cloud business. Those buyers plan cloud compute purchases around simulation deadlines and regulatory testing cycles rather than predictable monthly demand, which means Scaleway will likely need to build out consulting and workflow support alongside raw cloud infrastructure to make the acquisition pay off.

Backing from Iliad gives Scaleway’s cloud division financial room to make that investment. Whether it translates into real market share probably depends less on capital and more on whether Scaleway can earn technical credibility in a specialized cloud market where expertise matters more than brand recognition.
