Taking HostingDiscussion to the next level

Any update on announcement in 1st post? A responsive theme would be welcome, forum is difficult to read and navigate on mobile...

Yes, if you scan through this thread, there were at least a couple of updates along the way. Look out for my posts.

Discourse is what I preferred in last couple of years. It's great, but a bit more resource hungry.

I have a love and hate relationship with Discourse.

I love it because it is new, different and allows people to find the best information fast, instead of being presented with pages and pages of content.

I hate it because it is very snooty in what it needs to run. First, as you correctly mentioned, it is indeed RAM-hungry. Secondly, it requires Ruby on Rails and a specific version of Docket to run. So the only chance to run it is when you have a hosting service with full root access (VPS at minimum).
I am currently dealing with a brand new install on another site and even finding the right people to take care of that is a challenge, because it requires a bunch of server configuration work.

For us here the XenForo is still going to be the choice and the most common sense platform to upgrade to.

Yes, the installation can be tricky but I've managed to blast through it :D If you need someone to help set it up, I'll be more than glad to help.

I took a look through Discourse over the past couple of months and found it just lacked something. Not sure what, but it did.

For my own purposes (note: I had no problem starting over myself), I went with XF2, and am just incredibly happy I did. It just feels incredibly well done.

I'm definitely happy to see progress on this being made, or at least talked about , and can't wait to see what Artashes brings in place!!!

BTW, if you still haven't tested XF2 out, do yourself a huge favor and do so. Yeah, the mods aren't there, or at least most of them aren't, from XF1, BUT from what I've seen, mostly not needed :)

I have quietly started the migration of HostingDiscussion to XenForo. While it is being put together, tested, modified and so on (the list is long), I wanted to get your thoughts on future appearance.

So it happens that I am actually a fan of the default XF look and initially I planned to run the site based off it, with some very cosmetic changes. However, I am having second thoughts, so I decided to ask for your preferences.

Do we run with a default skin or seek a custom one? My taste in look leans towards a very light, minimalist experience, so even if a custom look is a dominant crowd favourite, most big changes will likely be limited to header of the community.

I now leave the floor open to your opinions.

Well, it's not so quiet anymore. Congrats on the migration to Xenforo. It's been a long time coming, but I'm confident you'll love the end result. I always opt for custom designs, but a default skin would work. It's the members that make this forum special.

"Quietly" in the sense that I first talked about it in 2016 and seeing how it was still not done today, I wouldn't be surprised if most people thought the update effort was dead. I am just not going to make promises or talk about release dates.

Thank you for your opinion and your vote. It'll most likely first launch with the default skin, while we gather more feedback.

Well, it is to me :p
Then again, I've been lurking for far, far too long ;)

Yeah, I get that. I gave up release dates long ago. As a developer, it'll be ready , when it's ready ;)

Good to see it's not dead though , glad to see the XF migration still in the works ;)

If you like the default theme, you might take a look at UIX, or many of themehouse's other themes. They have a pretty decent 'light' selection there, and do keep up rather well. Just saying, less work is better, right? :)

Haha! That's the best kind of delivery date one can provide.

I've looked through a ton of themes, spoken to 3 custom design houses, eventually selecting one I thought had the potential to deliver an original concept. Frankly, I am not a big fan of generic themes. There is almost always something that I don't like about it. I'd rather spend the necessary amount, but have an unique custom look that works for my purpose.

I know, I know, it's been a minute. :)

Without a hard commitment to the specific date, just a quick heads up that I am trying to prep the migration to XenForo to [hopefully] take place this week. So just in case the board is suddenly not open for activity at the point of your visit, it is possible that magical things are happening.

I was thinking that might be happening today, as when I first tried to connect, I got a IP Not Found message for HD. Five seconds I was able to connect.

It's actually planned for today, but I haven't spoken to the developer in charge yet, so it may have been something else. :)

Well, who else is feeling relieved to step away from vBulletin into an awesome new environment?

Personally, it feels great to be able to breath again. :coffee: šŸ˜„

Definitely lots of work ahead. If you saw the list of things that we still have to address in Notion, you'd wonder why I'd ever do that to myself, haha. But I honestly feel so good about this upgrade.
