NO-LIMIT bandwidth...I simply am getting fed up with lying marketing ads such as this...

I was just browsing HostSearch when A BIG nice Ad comes on stating NO-LIMIT bandwidth. This truly is becoming a joke and something needs to be done with these marketers...First they tricked customers with unlimited...then it was unmetered...and now they want to change the wording in the hopes of confusing poor customers yet again with NO-LIMIT (which is the same thing as unlimited).

Marketing people should seriously have to start going into double degrees so they are educated before coming up with these false terms *end rant*

PenguinWebHosting provides NO-LIMIT bandwidth for Professional Plan and Professional Plus Plan clients. To prevent possible abuse, PenguinWebHosting has the following policy which regulates the use of our NO-LIMIT Bandwidth Policy.

There are two types for PenguinWebHosting-hosted websites. These are:
1. NO-LIMIT Qualified
2. NO-LIMIT Unqualified

To be classified as "Qualified" your website must follow the following rules:

* 85% or more of your images, download files, etc. must be linked from an HTML or equivalent web page that is accessible to the public from your domain.
* Your website is comprised mostly of web pages, and images used on those pages.
* Your website is NOT primarily designed to provide files for download.
* Your website is NOT adult in nature.
* Your domain is on our nameservers

If your website is any of the following, it will be Ineligible for NO-LIMIT Bandwidth and will be provide a bandwidth limit of 100 GB per month for Professional Plan, 150 GB per month for Professional Plus Plan.

* If your website is a download website (designed primarily to provide files for download by visitors, or if over 90% of your bandwidth is used for video, audio and/or flash files), software downloads or is an adult website, a website comprised of an image gallery only, a website which contains a message board as its primary 'attraction' or any websites that contain shopping carts with over one thousand items are not eligible (ineligible) for NO-LIMIT Bandwidth and will be assigned limits as stipulated above.

* NO-LIMIT Bandwidth Increases. All PenguinWebHosting accounts will start with their normal packages bandwidth limit. Once you have used 80% of your bandwidth, simply contact tech support for an increase. At this time, we will verify the type of account you are on and insure that you are eligible for NO-LIMIT bandwidth and then increase it by an equal-to-original increment.

Unlimited means no limit.... Either way it's just a marketing startegy to attract customers. I think there is no such thing as unlimited or no limit bandwidth in hosting. The customers need to be aware of these facts and prevent themselves from being taken advantage of. :smash:

Unmetered dedicated servers are the only thing that wouldn't be deceptive advertising to the consumer.

I would not be suprised if other companies started using the NO-LIMIT data transfer policy, as Unlimited 'scams' are becoming more well known to consumers through hosting forums.

Finally, as already pointed out, when carefully reading a company's TOS that offers such services, you'll see that it's not the Unlimited you've been thinking of after all.
 
I agree something needs to be done to stop false advertising and marketing. Many consumers are unaware, and uneducated about the limitations of web hosting. Usually, companies like that don't last in the long run. Lets hope it stays like that :)

Something needs to be done about all of the no limit lark. There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth in the hosting industry.

There has got to be some sort of limit so that they can make a profit. That's the problem. All webhosts that have this expect all their customers to have small websites that just bring in a handful of traffic. What happens when they have a much larger site.

Its a battle in the industry and its up to the consumers to recognize this because the governments do nothing about it.

Don't host with hype. Find a quality host (YES HIGHER PRICES) who is honestly giving you wha tyou pay for and hiring staff to support you.

Unlimited doesn't exit. Unmetered does (just means as much as the line to the server can handle usually).
 
As much as I agree with ending the hype about UNLIMITED, but if the terms of usage are clearly stated in the Terms Of Service, would you still consider that false advertising?

I absolutely agree that UNLIMITED does not exist and wonder how people get away with advertising it.. but.. the average person would never know anyways.

Now, don't go flaming me LOL I am asking a question here not trying to shake a bees nest, ok?
 
Without naming names, the latest craze for providers seems to be to offer ridicules bandwidth allocations such as 500GB+ with shared hosting plans. In my opinion this is totally misleading to your average consumer and is just as bad as advertising unlimited bandwidth etc.

Good question. I personally would still consider that false advertising.

The fact that an average person doesn't know the difference, does not mean business should take advantage of that. Web hosting is a rare product for an average user, it is not a common-knowledge product (like clothes for example), so diligence and honesty from a professional merchant is expected by law I believe.

Compare it to the health industry. If you go to see a pharmacist for advice which medicine to get, he might as well sell you something else for $500 instead of the drug you are really looking for for $5. You wouldn't know the difference anyway, right?

As many people specified unlimited bandwidth is not possible on shared accounts. Only on dedicated servers "unmetered" constant speed internet connection is possible.
 
I agree - this fraudulent activity is left unchecked and it makes honest people the losers. Every hosting company offers unlimited, unless you use it. They offer everything FREE, unless you need something. They advertise unlimited hosting for $2.99 a month and when you sign up, you have to pay $299.00.

And its big companies like ebay. Hiding the real cost untill your on and running. They get people on for $20/month and then up the cost to $80 after 3 months.

This is an old trick. Car dealers have been using for years. New car $99/month. For the first 3 months, then pay $599.00 each month for 5 years. Its deception and it's wrong.

But who am I to fight ebay or google. So all we can do is rant.
 
if you sign up with hosting on an unlimited plan and start sharing live movies ect.. your asking for it. unlimited generally applies to people who purchase websites with good intentions if you get what im saying.
