Would you recommend celeron for a server

Depends what you want to do on it :-)

Static sites or limited number of dynamic sites will be fine on a Celeron (or Duron).

However if you want to run large dynamic database driven sites or large numbers of clients, then you may tax a smaller server.

Alternatively you may be better off having a few Celerons in different datacenters to provide a level of redundancy and spreading of risk rather than having one dual Xeon server. You'd possibly get more bandwidth & disk space this way, with the added bonus you could use these as backup DNS & MX hosts.

Basically it's all about what you want the server to do and your budget.

There's shed load of them out there :-)

Most of the major US dedicated suppliers seem to offer them, so I guess there's a demand.

Determine the proposed use of the server and then spec it. You may be far better off getting a cheaper CPU and more RAM, however if you do a lot of CPU intensive work get a dual CPU, if you do a lot of I/O go for SCSI.

There's no best server, spec what you need and buy according to your requirement.

If in doubt go for a dual Xeon with a few GB or RAM and big SCSI disks, but unless you need it, it'll spend all it's time idle, it'll just idle quicker :-)

The ones that do well on Hosting are Dual Xeons and Titanium. I have heard some nice things about AMD. I have an AMD server but I don't compare it with the Intel :)

Ok so you would say that intel are above the rest. At home I actuall have a celeron and amd and I find the celeron runs a lot faster although it's older

I run a Celeron 2.0ghz here at home, fast and works great.. although for hosting, sometimes it can seem to bog down on you.. I would proablby buy the p4 or an Athlon, they are probably the best for your money..

Yep, and AMD are cheaper :D. For instance, you got $600 for a Server, you can get an Intel 2.4Ghz + 120Gb IDE + 1Gb DDR Memory or an AMD 3200+ for the same price and same specs. If I'm not mistaken AMD 3200 is 2.8 or 3.0

AMD is a cheaper chip, they cause a lot of heat. So, they need to be monitored. But, in the long run, AMD is a nicer chip, don't use celeron for hosting..

AMD 3200 is 2.0GHz and the AMD 5300FX is 2.2gh
However you can do some major over clocking by changing the multiplier and bus speed in the bios :)

Just make sure you have a nice heatsink and efficient cooling.

Celeron vs P4 processor can be a hard choice when choosing your process speed for the server. The only main difference is the cache and the bus speed.

Celerons are not bad for static sites... and low traffic sites as Monoghan stated earlier. But if you have a server that has a lot of I/O and multi tasking the P4 core would be better for you.

We had an AMD 64bit 3200+ here at the office. We put a mammoth heat sink with water cooling on it. We managed to get it around 3.17ghz with 1600FSB. Anything more than that is going to cause a nice burning smell.

We were using the new Asus mobo with that processor. I think Asus has the best boards out for the 64bit amd right now.

As for a recommendation on a server you are going to purchase. If you are going to have less than 50 regular sized sites on a server a celeron will do just fine. If you are gonna have 50+ sites that have a lot of db's and dynamic content... i would get a p4. And if you are looking for some heavy hitting sites, get a nice dual xeon 2.8ghz with H/T and 2GB of memory accompanied with 2 73GB 15,000rpm drives. :)

Prices will range from a $70/mo celeron server too a $349 dual xeon. Pick whatever works in your budget.

It depends......... a celeron can be good.

I use a dedicated celeron server for my site, its a PHP & MySQL based site and serves about 125K pageviews/day and the Celeron handels it without any problems the load is just around 0.10 - 0.15 so I guess Celeron is not that bad.

But given the choice between Celeron and AMD Athalon I would go with Mr. AMD!
