Windows / Linux

I'm new at this. I see on the Host Gator site, that they offer "Linux Web Hosting, " but not "Windows Web Hosting" - yet. I know what Windows and Linux are, but not in this context.

It would be very helpful if someone could explain.

Thank you.

What's there to explain? Hostgator got into the cheap Linux hosting market, grew their customer base and now wants to offer Windows hosting.

Software support are different
Windows:
ASP/ASP.net
Perl
PHP 4 & 5 w/Zend
Tomcat Yes
Imagemagick w/GD
Server Side Includes
Frontpage Extensions
MSSQL
MSSQL Manager

Linux
CGI-BIN
Perl
PHP 4 w/Zend & eAccelerator
PHP 5 w/Zend
Python
Imagemagick w/GD
Server Side Includes
Frontpage Extensions

There is price, time involved for issues and everything else between. Some places just do not offer Windows for the sheer price they have to pay (for those renting/leasing servers and not owning them instead).

Which isn't really the case for Hostgator. They offer windows on dedicated servers already. Their main trouble would be getting enough well trained staff specializing in Windows hosting to cope with expected growth, without having to put temporary stops to sales (gives customers the wrong vibe), or decrease service/support quality.

IMO linux is far better than windows in terms of features, security, speed. Use windows only if you need specific features: asp, .net etc.

I believe as everyone do. No one will go with windows if he needs PHP/MySQL host

Hi razorboy,

Both of Linux Web hosting and Windows hosting were different by their OS.

As you said that you already know :) Linux Web hosting was hosting based Linux OS ( cheaper from windows) and the features a little different too. There some features in windows couldn't be used on Linux Web Hosting like Coldfusion, .Net, ASP and all about Microsoft product.

Hope this help even a little :D

Do not know if someone have already told you, but Linux hosting is cheaper than windows, because of no need to get paid licence for OS. Also what is supported by linux could be supported by windows, but vice versa it doesn't work.

Your right Hostgator does not provide Windows website hosting as if know, they have been looking to add Windows to their Armada for quite some time now, almost a year now. :crash:

Well, we only supply Windows hosting because that is what a majority of our members request. We do use Linux grids for custom solutions however in my experience Windows is the majority for most SMB. With that said, if you are just looking to host a blog and a few pages, then Linux is the way to go. Linux has its place as does Windows. As for email, I think Exchange has the most to offer but Microsoft’s Exchange license is ridicules. It would be nice to find an equivalent email “web client” for either Linux or Windows to compete with Exchange.

Yup this one I know :) Linux ix cheaper and I think you also get more security with it as well. Not to mention Fantastico on Linux... although I'm not sure if Fantastico works with Windows... that part I'm not sure of.

fantastico is an application that is used with cPanel . just the same as how direct admin has installatron .

Linux hosting is simply hosting on a Linux based operating system,Windows Hosting is hosting on a windows server/Windows based OS
