Who is responsible for....

Hi guys.

I own quite a unique site which is growing every day.

However, my Web Developer (who looks after the hosting for us via another (not his) 3rd party company) and I are having a slight disagreement.

Basically, any emails sent from our domain to Hotmail, AOL, etc are not being delivered to users' inboxes. Instead they end up in trash.

We are 100% not blacklisted anywhere.

I ask you - who is responsible for ensuring our mail ends up in the right place? Is it our ISP? I think it is, he says it 'isn't really their fault'

It's certainly not our fault, we have done nothing wrong and are losing money and members because of it.

I would aprreciate your comments!

All the best

Agreed. See, something you should understand is that Hotmail, AOL, etc impose general and internet wide bans, whether you're a spammer or not.

When AOL started this, you had to literally call them to have your domain taken off of their blacklist.

Actually, if your host doesn't have proper SPF records for your domains - that would be the reason the major ISPs are blocking you. I kinda have a hunch that lack of SPF records are the problem here.

Yep, most of these are now blocking sites that do not have SOA, reverse DNS, an "abuse" contact in the header, and most recently (and very important) a proper SPF record. Several companies have already started blocking mail from sites without a proper SPF since it is intended (whether it works or not) to reduce "spam". I agree the odds are it's an SPF problem.

It does seem to be an SPF issue but saying that, an ISP we work closely with has major issues with AOL and Hotmail despite everything being correct.

Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw but best thing to do is check your Host has all records up to date and work from there.
