Which service to pick

Greetings all, I need some advice on which service do I more likely require. I am starting up a site that will be providing downloads and uploads of music and video (4-100MB file sizes) along with providing samples of video and audio (~1MB size files). Does someone have any thoughts as to whether VPS or Dedicated server would be the way to go and what sort of CPU and RAM would more likely be required to make the thing work seamlessly?

Pure file transfers don't require much in terms of server resources. I'd go for the VPS and upgrade once there's a need to.

VPS should be good enough, though I'd go for a Dedicated server. I'd say around 2 GB ram is good and the faster processor you can get. I've seen some deals going around, where they give you 2GB extra = 4GB of ram. However, those are special deals, which I've seen from time to time. Just keep you eyes open for some specials ;)

You might one to try it on a VPS offered by reliable VPS providers first before changing it to Dedicated servers.

If it's just going to be serving up static content then a VPS should be able to easily handle your needs IMHO.

How many users do you plan to have online simultaneously? I know it may be difficult to forecast the way your site will grow, so by starting with a small VPS and upgrading later if required, you may save some costs.
Check myriadnetwork.com VPS offers, reasonable pricing, reputable company.

I would try ServerBeach. They have a Powerline 2600 which should be the best and cheapest Mid-Line server for you. I actually use that on one of my sites and it handles large files at ease. You don't need a massive CPU for file transfers, and usually SB will toss down some "BeachBucks" to upgrade your RAM. I got mine a month after I signed up and upgraded right away. That works best because you can start with 1GB RAM, and when the site starts gaining popularity, they take care of you into the 2GB mark.

I think dedicated is the best bet now days. I mean, MySpace alone is going to be pulling a TON of bandwidth from you. So a VPS won't really do.

Since you are just starting a new site I would suggest to go with VPS, once your site start outgrowing you can shift to dedicated server.

Again, I urge you, if you have the funding, go dedicated. I can't tell you how much of a hassle it is to move a large, growing site, from a server with limited resources and access, to a dedicated machine without a ton of downtime. It's just not worth the lost traffic in my honest opinion.

I agree with posts above. Start with semi dedicated server and once you feel crowded - move to dedicated server.
A2hosting.com and Wenhostingbuzz.com do offer semi dedicated servers and dedicated servers as well and their prices and service are quite good enough to be considered.

Even I would advice you for an VPS like many others as its just as good as a dedicated server and by any chance in future if you need to upgrade to a dedicated one it would be an easy shift for which you shouldn't be bothered much.
