When will people learn

When do you think people will learn that Text links are 100X's better than a banner rotation? Does anyone ever think about it? Do ya'll honeslty think that banner are a great way to help your site? From an admin point of view you could increase your earnings by 4 to 10 percent. I don't think you can charge that here yet, but very soon I asume you will be able to charge around 75-150 per text link. Yes you can have banner rotaions as well but I think the end user will feel more of an affect with a text link.

Why?

Well you can sell 25k banner rotaions per package for what 50 bucks? Lets say you get four packages going. That is 200 bucks for 100k banner rotaions not bad at all for doing nothing. I would say maybe 2% will ever click or care about the banner. I bet you wont have repeat business with banner rotations since their ROI isn't squat. I have spoken to TheReason about this when he first start this board up and I would have to say he agreed with me.

Onto the next point.

Text Links that pretty much says it all. Text link for one month with a PR of 5-7 would get around 150-200/month most likely more than that if the SEO is kept to the bar. Lets say you get 8 of those clients that is $1600/month just for those text links and the advertiser gains a lot more than a banner being rotated. The SE's will most defently Index your pages and also "Follow" all out going links which will help them out as well. You will see a greater impact on advertisers with text links. Lets say you are at the PR7 range and very well indexed with MSN, Yahoo, etc... I would say you could almost charge double of what I suggested before, since you are playing a major rule in their sites rankings. If they split off from you, their PR will still be nice but will gradually drop, then you will most likely see them as a repeat customer.

Just my three cents

I agree frattay, text links are alot more effective and are more profitable. Banners are good for branding. Branding is done by large companies, but for the most part I feel smaller companies would be better off working on SEO and putting a little money towards text links. BTW: Great Topic, very informative!

I honestly prefer both methods of advertising. One thing about banners that make them very effective is size and ability to catch a visitors attention if it is the first time they have seen it. So truthfully unless you are changing your banner every two-three weeks you should stick your banner campaign for that length of time.

If you look at your past campaigns it is always early on that you get the best clicks thrus. This is mainly because banners are placed in forums which have a lot of repeat members. The repeat members might click early on when they first see the banner but that is it.

Fresh banners every 2-3 weeks is still probably the best combination for brand awareness and a productive campaign.

What is the Current CTR here? That will be interesting to know. Also don't forget that you are targeting Web hosting here, and mainly the visitors you get are webmasters except for the visitors who find it via SE.

On an advertising seller it works out best for the seller of advertising to charge more for banners than a text link. Google adsense on my site isnt going to well however I am getting quite alot of uniques these days aswell and making a measly $2 a day :(

How can you say you can charge more for banners that text links? You can charge more for what ever I guess you are saying, but you will feel a bigger impact on text links than banners. I can hit the refresh button 500 times and guess what? Those are wasted impressions that I could care less about, that is with any site that offers impressions. I did not will not do that but just throwing an example.

Thanks for starting this topic, at TheReason said, its very informative, and frankly, I never thought about it that way, I knew that text links would be better, might be easier for SE spiders to find.

Premiush, that is what you are charging for brotha/sister! You are by large helping them out in the SE's and that is what they should want. SE traffic instead of click throughs on a banner rotation that no one really cares about.

Banner campaigns aren't suppose to be for results, but rather for branding. While text links are a better buy for your buck considering the various pluses you get from them, banners get your name out there. Do you really remember a companie's name from their hyperlink on website? Especially considering the anchor text is usually a keyword and sometimes not their company name? Banners are for branding a comapany's name.

I don't remember a company from a banner, and yes I would remember the text link that would be clicked if I was interested. Banners can be as mis-leading as text links in that aspect.

There are enough studies out there that conclude that images are far more lasting then words. Now that doesn't take into consideration something like banner ads when you might, after time, just block them out. But IMO it is much easier to grab your attention with an image then words.

Especially when the image is 100 times the size of the text and 100 times as bright and colorfull. Plus the fact that you probably see the image several times through your time browsing the page and banners rotate on every page of the forum. While text links usually only display on the homepage, maybe one or two others and look generally speaking the same as the other 10-20 links above and below it.

It's my opinion that your visual sense is the most used and sensative sense.
