What's the use from HDMI enabled desktops?

As I am preparing to get a new work desktop (the last desktop I purchased was about 5 years ago), I am looking around and seeing a lot of new things, functionality and features on both desktops and monitors.

My ideal set up is a 23-24" screen, no preference for desktop brand, as long as its super quiet, has great CPU and RAM.

Anyway, I noticed desktops now have Firewire (why do we need it?) and also HDMI. Some monitors also have the word HDMI on them. Does it mean that I can connect desktop to monitor through HDMI cable and get high def resolution? Or am I getting it completely wrong?

Most graphics cards for a while now have been capable of HD (full 1080p or i ) even the Nvidia 8600gt for example and most newer laptops now have HDMI, in the terms of and office like desktop it will simply allow for higher resolution and multiple monitors without video degradation that you will find with splitting VGA. Otherwise it isn’t really a must. :)

Though if the card is a newer 8800 or 9+ series or equivalent ATI it will allow also for better performance at the higher resolutions across multiple monitors.

Thanks! But in English? :D

Does it mean that I can actually connect the monitor to desktop directly through an HDMI cable instead of a regular monitor cable, by doing so improving the resolution?

in a nutshell yes :P you will get a better performance thought the resolutions will be the same.
