What is the difference between dedicated and shared hosting?

Shared hosting means that multiple customers (accounts) will share the servers resources amongst themselves. Dedicated hosting is when you share a server with no other accounts and get to use 100% of the resources yourself.

Dedicated hosting is mostly for more advanced users with site's that need alot of resources, as opposed to shared hosting which is 100% managed and users don't have to deal with the servers at all. Hope that helps a bit. :D

Dedicated Servers

A dedicated server is a physical web server leased and controlled by the end client, without sharing physical CPU and RAM resources with other sites. Its very much like owning your own server, without the huge capital asset investment.

Most hosts offer a mix of unmanaged versus managed services for dedicated servers. Unmanaged plans typically offer the basics - the hardware, operating system, control panel and Internet connection.

With a dedicated server, you have flexibility and control. Dedicated servers have historically been the server of choice for complex business or high end eCommerce sites, but have recently become very popular substitutes for VPS servers and less complex solutions.

Dedicated servers housed in data centers offer redundant power sources, HVAC sytems, state of the art security and advanced performance services.

Well said Steve.

With dedicated hosting, you are not affected by other sites on the same server. In shared hosting environments, other site processes, scripts or activities can cause problems on the server that could affect anyone else on the same machine. With a dedicated server YOU would be the only web site on the server and not be affected by other users on the system.

that's all right answer..so now, you can decide what hosting that suitable with your website..i suggest you to take shared hosting first, because you're not advance with hosting..

Everyone is right on this one. Dedicated is one of those "if you have to ask you don't need it" things. You have a whole server to yourself but that means you also have the operation of the server such as security software updates & patches, etc. Stats show an unsecured new server coming "on-line" will be hacked in less than 15 minutes if that gives you an idea. :shaky:

Start with a good shared provider and learn that part of running your site. When you outgrow that you can go to a VPS which is like having your own server but it's just a piece of a big server you are sharing "virtually". With a good VPS provider you will get support to help you through the learning curve then you will know about operating a server about 80% so if/when you outgrow that you will have an idea of how to choose a good dedicated provider that will have what you need...and you will have to have grown to having a HUGE site to need your own server.
Best of luck...but start at the bottom and work your way up. You can have some really big/active sites running on a good shared account.

shared hosting provider give you more comfort to step up in the internet business with plenty of tool for starters.
such as website builder, easy to install scripts, with minimum investment if you compared with dedicated server.

Liza. Just have a piece of paper and pen. D\Write down what you need to host and then try to calculate what you need (I assume you can do that on this forum as well).
You need to understand what you are looking for and why. Without this your search will be useless

Hi,
I don't know the difference between these two. But i heard that shared hosting is more useful. For further information you can take from this site-

If you don't know the difference, how could you possibly recommend one versus the other without knowing more specifics? It sounds like you're selling packages and NOT solutions.

In shared hosting, you are sharing the web space with multiple other domains on the same server. The resource usage would be limited, and no domain would be allowed to monopolize the server resources.

In dedicated hosting, the server is just for you. The entire memory and space can be used for your own domains.

Shared hosting ( Share by many user in one server)
Dedicated Hosting ( One user use the whole server)

In other words, shared hosting lesser disk space provided whereas, dedicated server will have more space and suitable for a highly traffic website.

Correctly said by louis87. Inaddition to that, with a dedicated server you'd get complete administrative access to the server with free back-up space(depending on the host). On a dedicated server you can create multiple shared accounts and resell to your customer. You have the privilege to the use the dedicated server as per your wish i.e. you can install softwares and applications of your choice. You can even get a dedicated server customized as per your hosting requirements which is not at all possible with a shared server.

Shared hosting is very cost effective, because you are sharing hosting with maybe 100 other websites on a single, powerful server.
Shared hosting offer just about all your site needs in terms of space, bandwidth, email, etc. You can even order different IP addresses for each of your websites with shared hosting.
The benefits of shared hosting is low cost (average price is around $5 month per website), your own domain name and lots of software options like database, CGI, etc. If you run a small business and don't expect more than 1000 visitors to your website per day, then shared hosting is for you.
The only problem with shared hosting is that bandwidth is limited, so if your site becomes very popular you might find yourself running out of bandwidth quickly.
If you ever wanted to test the waters and put your own website up on the Internet, start with shared hosting and your own domain - its the way to go.

Dedicated hosting is the opposite of shared hosting. Dedicated hosting is about you being in total control of the server and what goes on the server. You decide whether to host 1 site or 10 of your sites.
Dedicated hosting allows you to tailor database, email and software applications to your desire - so it works the way you want it to. This is powerful.
Dedicated hosting is ideal for websites with high traffic and large businesses who want complete control over the server so they can fine tune for special shopping cart software, etc.
Another benefit of dedicated hosting is you can resell the space/bandwidth to people who want to setup their own website.
Unlike shared hosting, dedicated hosting will cost considerably more, something like $50 month for a simple dedicated server.
If your website is critical to your business, then I'd highly recommend dedicated hosting.
