What is HTML 5?

I read that there is a release 5.0 to HTML due out soon. Does anyone know what changes are being made to this language? What about XHTML?
 
HTML 5 improves interoperability and reduces development costs by making precise rules on how to handle all HTML elements, and how to recover from errors.HTML5 is currently in development for the next major changes standard.The HTML5 specification was adopted starting work on a new HTML Working Group of the World Wide Web Consortium.
 
I don't get it. First they went from HTML to xHTML which is the child of XML. Why do they want to return to HTML?
 
Thanks HostLeet. That link helped explain what they are doing. It looks like a substantial change for the better. Less reliant on 3rd party aps.
