What FTP programme should I use.

Hi

I have a problem on my server; I have used up all of the available space disk space, all 1.2 gig worth. Now the problem is I haven't got a clue where it has gone. I'm running quite a few sites and tool on the server but none of them are that big and 1.2 gig should be more than enough.

What I need to do is figure out what is using up all the disk space. Now if I was doing this on my PC I would do a search and order it by file size so I figure out quickly what the problem was. Is their anyway I can do that through a FTP programme? Presently I use WiseFTP but that’s only because I got it for free with a magazine. What does every body else use, is their anything better I could get my hands on, I don't even mind paying.
 
SmartFTP has gotten quite good too, it's also free. You should be able to sift through and find file / directory sizes. If your connection / bandwidth alotment allows, you might also try to just download your whole site at once and check it out on your home computer. :)
 
Just some advise....I would check your mail folders first. More often than you can imagine, when your space fills up for no visible reason, the default mail account is the culprit, as it usually contains all mail errors, spam, etc, that is sent to your domain, without a valid email address.

Example...
Someone sends spam to your domain at user1@domain.com, but user1@domain.com doesn't exist on your account. It will get thrown into the default address.

How do you do that, Mark? I think that's partly my problem as well.

When you login to your account via ftp, you'll want to stay outside of your public_html directory. You'll see a folder called "mail"

Inside of that folder, you'll see other folders for all of your subdomains, etc.

However, there is one file in there called "inbox". It has no ext. You can delete this (it will be recreated as an empty file, the next time you get mail).

The alternative is to open your email client (Outlook, etc), check mail on that account by creating a new email account in Outlook, with your cpanel username@domain, and cpanel password.

It will then check that account as it does your others.

Note: I was shocked one day when we decided to check the account as a regular account for the first time, and received 23000 emails.

Does it look anything like this?

That is a long list. So I can safely delete the whole folder "cur", correct?

Molly - That screenshot is an example of FileZilla in action. If Mark's solution doesn't solve it for you, probably best to install FZ and try and find it manually :)
 
With Cpanel .... I set my Default Account to ":blackhole:" That way all undirected mail (mail to a non existent account) get dumped immediately. Personally, if they don't know my address I don't want their mail.

But ... I do that before the main account gets clogged with unsolicited emails.

FTP, Just you can try using Dynu Enterprise Server, I personally use that it combines all WebServer, FTP, Email.. etc I personally feel its good, If interested.. Just you can try..
 
Now adays the most three popular FTP Clients are 'SmartFTP' 'CuteFTP' and 'FlashXP (Or something like that)' But for me, i like to use 'CoreFTP' Its not as advanced as others inferface wise, but it has just the same features as any other client, just a less entertaining enterface, and smaller.
 
I am using Filezilla as well. I run 3 websites on one host and filezilla allows me to pull all or only some of the files or sites. Its very helpful when I run my forums since I use phpBB2 because before I add a MOD, I can just go in and download the files im going to edit for backups incase I mess up, I can then just upload them back.
 
I also use FileZilla, I switched to it and ever sense it has done the trick for me. A lot better to use than some of the other ones. I will be using it for a long time to come without any doubt at all.
