What are your thoughts on Amazon Mechanical Turk?

As a requester it is an extremely "cost effective" way to get things accomplished. As a worker some of the tasks (aka HITs) seem unusual and lengthy for the amount offered. Do you think this is a new trend for the work at home world?

I hadn't heard of it until your post. It's a very interesting concept. Similar freelance sites require the freelancer to write proposals, which can take up time that could otherwise be used to work. And not all gigs posted are bona fide.

What seems different about Amazon's idea is that the requester has to pay them up front, which may weed out some of the less serious players.

On the other hand, even by its very name, this seems geared for people willing to work for very small amounts of money. That may do for people in less developed countries or others who really need even small money. But it doesn't seem viable for US or other first-world workers, for the most part. Surprising, then, that Amazon is doing this.

Maybe workers can make money by doing the really repetitive tasks quickly.

Well, I put up a request and was charged a 10% fee in addition to the cost for the work. I imagine that's how Amazon is making their money on this. I like it a lot though - it's so general you can post and ask anything and someone will be able to do it! :agree:

Hi........,
I think the Mechanical Turk is a great idea, and it isn't surprising that Amazon is behind it- they have done a lot with web services. however, I'm not sure how much money it will make for Amazon. Given that many (if not most) of the tasks will have very small payouts, it will probably be tough for them to collect much per job. Still, if they can get lots of volume, it will be interesting and worth watching.
