What are the best Wiki software applications on the market?

I am a complete noob when it comes to anything-Wiki.

I was wondering what is the best Wiki application out there (open-source or paid)? I am looking for a very simple, lightweight application that is easy to work with and customize further. If you like few, let me know what they are.

Same here. Used it once, and it worked well so I never had a need to try using another.

Id have to agree, havent seen anyone use anything but MediaWiki, have used it myself also. althogh TikiWiki is reasonably similar and if i remember rightly a bit more customisable (looks wise at any rate) using smarty template files (identical to whmcs etc)

I have to disagree with everyone here putting MediaWiki out there as the default best wiki software. Though it's widely used, well supported and of course very well known because of Wikipedia, it is hardly the best choice for every use.

It's important to remember that MediaWiki was and is developed primarily to host Wikipedia and related projects. It's unlikely your wiki project shares the particular requirements of Wikipedia (the 7th busiest web site on the Internet, and hosting encyclopedic information).

Though I am biased towards EditMe - www.editme.com - I would advise anyone with this question to use the WikiMatrix.org web site - it provides a nice comparison of the many wiki products available based on the specific needs of your project.

It may very well be that Wikimedia is the best choice for your project, but based on your stated requirements (simplicity, easily customized) I'd say there are many better options. EditMe happens to excel at both of these requirements.

Never said it was the default best. I will say that choosing your wiki software is very important. If you find something that better fits your needs you'll have FUN trying to transfer over after you've got a very reputable database of content.

Why are you biased toward EditmME?
What are the advantages of this software over Mediawiki?

I haven't used any wiki software for quite some time so I'm curious to hear the advantages of one over another.
