Web hosting reviews: what sources are worth trusting today?

I’m curious how people evaluate web hosting companies these days, especially when it comes to reviews and third party sources.

The vast majority of “review” websites are really just affiliate lists in disguise. Same hosts show up over and over, same bullet points and zero evidence of direct service experience. Even when they claim to offer independent advise (top-tier media organizations are equally guilty of this), once you look a bit closer it’s all referral links and rankings that magically align with payouts.

What I’m trying to figure out is this: what sources do you personally trust when you want to scan real user feedback about a hosting company? Places where we can identify patterns about how a company handles outages, billing issues, support quality, or long term stability. Forums, communities, subreddits, review platforms (ex: TrustPilot?), anything that gives a more honest angle.

I’m especially interested in sources that are fair and accurate, and not driven by affiliate revenue.

Would love to build a short list of places that are actually worth paying attention to.

Well, personally, I check with my friends (Most of them just work in IT), but you can trust TrustPilot, they block reviews that seem suspicious to them, or when a reward is offered for a review.

But reviews are not always what will help you, and the best solution is to independently analyze where the locations are located, how quickly technical support responds, and whether the characteristics are normal for the requested price. You can conduct an experiment yourself and it will help you decide whether the service is suitable for you or not.

TrustPilot is the first choice and then I guess a normal search over the internet to see if they have any complaints, reviews on forums such this one would be another option

@Mivocloud @dkatsaris What do you guys think about hosting review sites in general? Are there any that you either trust or check in with?
Hi! No, for the most part I don't trust reviews and I think the best solution would be to check each hosting yourself. Check their reaction speed to messages, how they can help with server problems, etc.

I have dummy websites that I use for WordPress development to test out layouts and other features that I might someday employ for my clients. When I evaluate hosting companies, I usually focus on those that I would use for client projects or websites that I need hosted without having to manage the servers myself. The first thing I do is contact their sales team or find a chat option.

I ask them common questions like what year they were founded and who started the hosting company. I intentionally ask questions that can be easily found on the website, just to gauge their knowledge and responsiveness.

I also inquire about specific requirements that I have. Often, I can quickly determine if the hosting company might be a good fit for me. If they pass the initial chat test, I will order hosting for a month and transfer one of my dummy projects over.

After a month of testing, I’ll consider moving one of my own projects or a client’s project. Following the second month of testing, I typically request a yearly pricing plan, as I prefer not to pay monthly.

Throughout this process, I use monitoring software to track the uptime of the websites and ensure everything remains stable.

Consistent uptime is critical; if a hosting company cannot provide at least 99.9% uptime, they may not be suitable for this industry. I typically aim for hosting services that offer 99.99% uptime. Anything less raises concerns for me.
