Virtuoso

I think you also mean a product spelled like this - Virtuozzo.
I believe Virtuoso is a travel agency. :D

As far as I know there is no free version. Maybe a trial. The only other "virtual" sever software is part of the H-sphere system and requires their complete package. Virtuozzo is by far the leading VPS software.

Actually, I think OpenVZ is a "free version" of Virtuozzo or somehow related to Virtuozzo. I've installed OpenVZ and it worked great -- see openvz.org.

OpenVZ is the open source project sponsored by SWSoft (makers of Virtuozzo) and it's really a cool idea, offer & support the open source project, then you have the potential for developments & improvements from a "free" team of developers that they may later incorporate into the commercial product.
It sounds like a good deal, just a less polished version and maybe with some extra bugs being open source.
The only thing I would note, is depending on the skill set of the OP VPS can be daunting and that's why people pay for Virtuozzo, added features sure, but also tech support and help in properly designing & configuring the set up of specific servers for the best performance & to keep everything humming along.
I'm sure if you are running it you would agree there's a lot more to administering a VPS box than conventional reseller accounts.

Here are the differences in both.

Virtuozzo - Costs money, Control Panel(paying for the control panel)

OpenVZ - Same thing as Virtuozzo, Free, No Control Panel, Maybe one update behind Virtuozzo.

There are more differences than that - OpenVZ does not have the SLM memory features that are available in Virtuozzo. SLM is much better than the old UBC method. Performance, compatibility, and reliability are greatly increased over OpenVZ. OpenVZ also lacks the Virtuozzo Filesystem (VZFS) as well. Those are two major reasons why OpenVZ doesn't really compare against Virtuozzo. OpenVZ also lacks the VZNetstat functionality as well.

I would have to agree that SLM mode is great now. We use it on our new nodes also.
