How many folks here offer VPS machines? Do you find it worth the time and resources?

How many folks here offer VPS machines? Do you find it worth the time and resources?

In light of some recent events, we are possibly looking at dropping VPS from our line up.

Tried offering VPS and dedicated servers, managed to sell 1 VPS in 8 years then the client decided without telling me to go to my provider direct, leaving with outstanding invoices, but then he did the same with my supplier had outstanding invoices so his server was terminated.

so not these are not listed on my site, so offically i dont offer these, but if a current client were to ask i could easily get 1 for them.

but to me its not worth the time etc.

We offer them and usually make some profit off them here and there. We get a lot of tickets from vps clients with dumb questions and often a lot of abuse reports too. Its an alright service to offer but its also something you have to watch and maintain if you know what I mean..

I find it easier to sell VPS services then Shared Hosting services, and find it that VPS makes a little more profit than our shared services. So I think if we were to drop a service from our listing it would be dedicated servers or shared hosting.

We have been doing it for a while now, and pretty much do very well with them a lot with most of our other services.

Once you get the name out there for them, plenty of people sign up!

Eh, Shared hosting is fairly easy to manage and deal with, but the VPS side of things has always been a headache for us.

Still on the fence about ditching VPS'. :-/

What problems did you have with your VPS customers? Yes, selling VPS services can be profitable, but you have to manage the nodes properly or all you get is unhappy customers. Maybe it takes some time getting up to speed if all you were used to doing was shared hosting.

We are a reseller on the VPS side of things so we have no access to the node, which makes management a bear, especially when someone else on the node is being abusive towards the available resources, or the node is over sold.

As we do not have enough current VPS clients to warrant firing up a dedicated machine to house them, we are kind of stuck. We never have had much interest in VPS' anyways, so it's not like we would be loosing much. Obviously we will still support our current VPS clients and assist them if they choose to upgrade at any time or have troubles, but for taking on new clients, not so much.

Yes, in such situation i can see what you have problems. VPS hosting only makes sense in the long term if you buy your own server(s) and colocate. It can be a nice side revenue source, especially since you already have staff with free time, probably some good agreements with DCs, etc.

The possession of fully redundant data centers. If you are considering doing business with a smaller hosting vendor, ensure that they have adequate power and connectivity capabilities. Inquire as to the number of lines the facility has. Do they possess an on-site generator?

Not to be a prude, but Proaxxs-peter, I'm not sure I follow the point of your post?

We already offer VPS machines, I was wanting a feel for how many people offer them, and in light of some of our recent events, should we continue to offer them.

Given that we are now in two of the largest carrier hotel's in the US, I'm pretty sure they have an on site generator, plenty of power and over 600Gbps bandwidth connectivity.

Could you clarify your comment a little bit for me? I'm confused.

I completely agree with rds100. vps management becomes more easy when you have access to hardware node. Being vps provider you should have your own hardware node.

In all honesty we make most of our profits off Virtual Private Servers. Few clients do approach us thinking that they will need a Dedicated Server to host what they're looking to bring to the public but in all honesty they don't.

All our servers by default come un-managed but we do offer a Managed Solutions for an additional 39.99USD per month which gives the client 5 hours of Management for the server associated with the plan per month. It's not a bad option at all as of course at the end of the day our employees would like to eat at night! Can't get much cheaper :)

Virtualization and all foes of VPS services is great thing to have. We do Xen, OpenVZ and KVM virtualization. Despite that when you deal with virtualized infrastructures you loose 10% of computing resources on average, the flexibility and scalability you get worth the money and the effort.
