Validate a Non-Profit

How would one go about confirming that a company is regsitered as "Non-Profit". Is there some sort of number to request and call in and verify? How could/can it be done?

At least, in the U.S. If you're outside the U.S. and know how it's done in your country, by all means - share!

I am not sure about the United States. However, you can lookup registered charities in England and Wales via the Charity Commission's website at: http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk
