Up Selling Query

I registered a domain name recently and yesterday one of the registrar's sales reps called me to query if I wanted to upgrade to privacy protection and hosting. When he asked who was going to host my site, I answered we'll probably do that ourselves. (duh) How many others have seen or used this after market strategy?

Haven't had this before - was it GoDaddy, out of interest? (Since their shopping cart has about 12,491,182,839 upsells ;))

I'm surprised to hear this though; I'm not too fond of the thought of receiving a sales phone call every time I purchase from a particular company.

Never had that happen to me for anything web related, but I have had random calls on my business line after I inquiry about a product (not purchasing it) and its a true pain to get off the damn calling list.

I'd had that too, shockym. Honestly, I was totally shocked when I received that call. I knew immediately he was trying to upsell me, but he hadn't done any research on who we were. Considering the volume of domains they must register daily, this must be a boiler room approach.

Have to agree GoDaddy certainly does a ton of upselling ... it takes 20 minutes to opt out or past all of their offers. :D

The ones that piss me off are the letters from the "Canadian Domain Registry" or something close to that name.

I get letters on all of my .ca domains that they are about to expire and that I need to renew through them and triple the cost I already pay for the domains.

These people are scumbags.
They prey on people who don't know any better.

I know. I get these letters too. My wife is like, "What are these? Do we need to renew these domains now?" They all go straight to the circular recycling bin.

Sounds familiar :), I used to work for a p l u s back in 05, since they were a registrar they did call everyone who registered a domain and try to upsell them, this wasn't just for those buying from them, this also included other registrars new registration. trying to sell you privacy while using your public info to sell that to you LOL
