You can pick up .info domains really cheap these days. The problem with this however is back in 2006 or 2007 when they first entered the scene they were so cheap that all the spammers headed over to pick one up. For a while, domain registrars were letting you buy a .COM and get a .INFO for free.
It saturated the market with spammers and as a result Google devalued the listing in the search engines.
You'll be hard pressed to find a .INFO domain extension ranking high in Google. It's not to say that they're no good, but they definitely got a bad rap!

I have to agree with Conor. Undervalued? Across the board, I don't think so.
Thanks Connor for the enlightening reply. So the spammers that gave .info a bad name. Too bad I registered a domain name with .info extension for my blog last year. Do you think it is not worth it to promote the blog?

It's definitely not a throw away extension. I played with the .info for a long time in years past but never really amounted to anything. In the end I ended up pointing handsonwebhosting.info back to our main page as it just wasn't going to get the exposure it needed.
Who knows, maybe one of these days I'll put up a page similar to our LLC page which hilights the things that our company does, but for now, it just sits as a parked domain.
.info domains SHOULD, in theory, rank just as high as a .com domain name. At the end of the day it's really about how much promotion and backlinks you're getting for your domain name. A .info can and should rank as well as any other domain name, sometimes even higher as "info" can be used as a keyword in the domain title too.
Search for "web hosting info" and check out what pops up first
Yet, something like "shopping cart info" doesn't show at all (also because it was just a purchased domain that they're squatting on for a sale).
But you get the idea.

My first website was a .info actually, what I learned was invaluable. It took months (literally) to get my pages indexed in the various search engine. It was my first so I thought this was normal. Later, I realized that searches favor the original domain extensions. I will say that once they finally indexed my site over time, they did start to treat it like a more popular extension.

If you give the .info extensions some time and you have a few years of ownership behind it, you can rank a .info without much of a problem. Just takes time and promotion/links.

I do agree dot info is undervalued. Please note that we can't registering the country names, like iraq.info or canada.info. I know it would worth a lot.
You have keep in mind that general public are only used to .com, .net, .org. From a business point, having a .com domain is very important because if your business is xyzcarpets, most users will simply try xyzcarpets.com. If one is simply trying to have a online blog or build an adsense site, they can still manage a good ranking with .info

I agree with you for the most part, except achieving a good SERP rank. Google honestly does not rank .info domains very well.
So if you are purchasing a .info domain with SEO in mind, you'd be wasting your time.
This is really not true and is only in your imagination. Why? because most .info's are sketchy spam houses.
Go ahead, try it.. search for "web hosts info"
If you have QUALITY content, google will put you up there regardless of your extension.

.info's are just cheap domains if you are looking for a quick domain.
$0.99 for a .info isn't bad so you don't have to deal with subdomains.
