What happens if you payed for a domain to be transferred, when it had never been registered in the first place? I didnt realise what transferring a domain was, but my host (www.hostime.com) allowed me to do it. but i have read up and i believe its only for already existing domains?

I have tried contacting my host, but i cannot for the life of me contact them. see here if you can help ^_^

Hello,

Yes for transfering the domain, the domain has to be registered first.

In your case, you need to contact your hosting company or the domain registrar from where you have purchased the domain and tell them either to register the domain so that you can get the domain transfered at your end or else refund back the money for the domain registration and get the domain registered with other registrar so that the domain is not taken. You have to get this process done immediately as the domain has to be registered.

Thank you.

Regards,

Hello,

Please allow up to 90 days for your order to be processed. Thank you for your patronage and understanding as we work hard to ensure your registration is accurate.

If, after 90 days, your order has not been processed please email support@hostime.com and we will reply promptly. Hostime is an industry leader in customer service and generally answer emails within 30 days.

Btw. We believe that this thread is unnecessary and should be deleted. The customer clearly disobeyed corporate procedures and is computer illiterate. It is not our duty to "babysit" them through the order process.

Well 1st off you should have CHECKED the domain. Also.. I don't get it? Why would you "transfer" a domain when you don't own it? That doesn't make any sense? Did you misunderstand something or weren't sure about something?

If so, feel free to ask us here anytime reguarding ANY hosting/domain questions. We can always help out and give the best possible information/feedback.

BTW, they should give you a refund, if you paid and it didn't work out. I know most companies pay you back, if the transfer doesn't go through.

I don't think this thread should be deleted, nor do I think threads are ever deleted. From what I can observe, your company did nothing wrong. I think it would be a neat feature to have the system check, and verify that the domain is registered already. But none the less, you did nothing wrong. The USER is responsible for OWNING the domain and making sure it is eligible for transfer.

Thank you for your comments, Cal813. It certainly is the responsibility of the customer to process their order correctly and we take no liability for users unable to follow basic instructions.

In addition this customer was refunded and prohibited from using our services in the future.

While I agree that the onus is on the customer to come to the table with a domain that they actually own, I have to wonder what would prohibit a 'post registration' of a domain. I guess unless the domain was already registered to someone else.

Our signup system checks to see if the domain the customer intends on using is already registered or not, but that's about it. It can't check if our potential customer is the one who owns it.

Interesting issue.

Hostime-com: was it really necessary to prohibit the OP from using your services in the future? In his post he states that "I didnt realise what transferring a domain was". Maybe banning is a little strong for a misunderstanding?

I agree with you hostingpuppy. He basically lost a customer now.
I know it might be tough to see a customer posting about your company and you may see it in a bad way. The person was obviously new and personally I'd have advised him about the issue. Or if you have a FAQ I'd have posted that, to show him and allow him to understand about domains.

I don't think a system should check if he is the true owner. When the user is paying for a transfer, there should be an area before the customer can pay, which says "You must own the domain, inorder to transfer it to us"

Something like that would really help new customers. :)
