We're building a social media site using Ruby on Rails. I've had experiences with a lot of hosts before but never looked for one that specialized in Rails. We'd love to be dealing with a company whose admins have experience with RoR and might be able to help with admin and optimization.
We'll be in dev for the next few months with the plan for a live site towards the end of the year. While we'd like to keep costs low in the short-term in the long run we want to be sure we have a solution that scales well and are willing to pay a premium for that. We can always switch hosts later but our ideal would be to form a relationship with someone that will be a long-term one. We're hoping this site will be pretty big so ideally we work with a company that can scale us to the million monthly unique number and beyond.
Three hosts that we've heard a lot of good stuff about are Engine Yard, Rails Machine and SliceHost. Would love to hear opinions on any of these companies, especially negative experiences people may have had.
Also considering companies like Site5, DreamHost and MediaTemple although we've heard mixed things about these companies.
Below is a list of the stuff we're looking for in a web host. Any and all suggestions and advice would be very welcome. Thanks!
Requirements
* Linux or BSD
* Ability to install packages (gems)
* Ability to get to logs.
* May need to install/run syslog daemons as required by Rails Analyzer (extra
points if they know about this tool).
* Command line access via ssh
* Support for ruby 1.8.5, rails 1.2.3, mysql 5.0.x
* Commitment to upgrade to new versions quickly and multi-version support (so
that we're can choose when to upgrade out app)
* Mongrel cluster support (this is the state of the art rails web server)
* Ability to configure virtual hosts on Apache (which we may need to front
mongrel)
