2020 was off to a shaky start with the Global COVID-19 pandemic spreading unabated to all corners of the world causing major disruptions and causing a shift in the way we do things. The traditional work environment has significantly changed and working remotely has become the new normal. This has led to a spike in the number of internet users.

As of April 2021, 6 out of 10 users are connected to the internet, accounting for a total of 4.7 Billion users worldwide. Now, this is good news for web hosting providers who are seeking to capitalize on the ballooning number of the online community seeking to build websites or host their applications both for personal and commerce purposes.

It is estimated that the hosting market will grow by 15% by 2025 from 2018 and needless to say, hosting providers will battle it out to provide the latest cutting edge technology to their clients to stay on top of their game.

Here are some of the trends to look out for.

1. Green web hosting

More hosting providers will embrace eco-friendly hosting that seeks to mitigate the overall carbon footprint which is linked to global warming. We will see more companies embracing green energy which constitutes solar and wind energy. In addition, more providers will turn to more energy-efficient server hardware such as SSD drives and efficient server software.

2. Accelerated Security

In a constantly evolving technological world, security remains a key concern in the face of numerous breaches which comprise millions of highly confidential and private data. As such, most hosting companies will seek to comply with the bare-minimum security standards such as two-factor authentication, and data encryption to avoid cybersecurity meltdowns and data violations. Also, more vendors will offer domain privacy features to users who prefer anonymity.

3. Multi-Cloud hosting

A multi-cloud architecture is a blend of various types of cloud models including private and public cloud or hybrid cloud. A multi-cloud approach will help organizations achieve greater flexibility and economies of scale. In a 2020 Cloud computing survey, more than 55% of organizations use multiple public clouds and this number is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years.

4. Shrinking of traditional data centers

The flexibility, agility & reliability of cloud computing. will see more organizations shifting from their on-premise datacenters to the cloud. This will greatly save on setup costs, power, licensing, and other costs associated with running a data center.

5. A rise in competition amongst Cloud providers

This should come as no surprise as Cloud providers will seek to offer the latest security features and addon services such as DDoS protection & Cloudflare CDN to their existing hosting packages. We will see an increase in discounted deals on various hosting plans as price wars escalate. This is all with the goal of attracting and retaining new customers.

I think there is a lot of scope for greenwashing here.

Yes, there will be companies who actually make real changes to the way they do things in order to be more sustainable, but there are also going to be a lot more that want to be seen as green and eco while actually doing as little as possible to change that.

Any links to the locations that you found those stats? The hosting growth is interesting, so I'm wondering how they arrived at that number for growth.
