TONS OF GBS - Global Web Hosting Bluff

Hi,
It is so amazingly surprising that web hosting companies can offer 300 GB space in shared hosting plans and yet be accepted.
I often am surprised that how web hosting customers world over get to accept this.
Knowing fully well they do not mean it, they are doing it and being accepted.
Are there any rules of business, any code of ethics. What on earth is this.

No, there are no rules of business or code of ethics that stop people from offering oversoled packages to people. It is the dark side of Web Hosting. People fall for these packages, and some that know that unlimited is not possible still buy it. It is quite sad indeed.

overselling is the black horse of the market and always will remain to be until people vist forums like this and others and force hosts to have limits once again although it will never happen as its marketing...

with that said it is possible to offer say 250gb on a shared server dependant on network setup and number of users per server, often the main server that deals the requests will use network drives from a storage server/cluster that way host can potentially offer these packages but its unlikely for most hosts.... rule of thumb being check the TOS and it will become aparent

Yep...The companies TOS will say it all. It show the massive restrictions they put on packages that are oversoled.

This is a good question to ask yourself, how big is your hard drive on your home desktop?

I would say an average hard rive is is 300-500 GB

What amazes me is not that the web hosting companies are offering it, but why the people are falling to it, why its accepted by the customers. I assume every one going for web hosting owns a computer or knows about computers that much to know what size a hard disk can have. Yet ...............

Most people do not know what their HD is. Most are kids that use their parents or another family member's computer. Also, people who are new to the industry do not know and eventually fall for the gimic. But, EVERYONE in this world should know there is no such thing as unlimited, so when they see unlimited space and bandwidth that should tip them off to something is not right.
