Tips to Build a Web Site Now

If you are planning to build a web site right away for your domain, it is often easiest to register the domain name with your chosen web host. If you decide to host and register separately you will want to choose a domain registrar with a quick DNS set up time. Usually this process can take as long as two days to get the domain name and web host in sync.

The propagation will depend much more on the ISPs rather than the registrar.

It has often proved safer to choose different companies. :)

Yes I would agree with this.

Now this is true if you have a clue on what you are doing. I have had clients that cannnot figure out how to change there nameservers for an account because they chose to save a $1.00 and register there name somewhere else. Then they cannot get there nameservers changed correctlly and open a ticket to have us fix it. We do not provide support for this of course and then they get mad at us and do not continue service. I would bet that some of these customers end up taking hosting where they registered there domain at afterall.

So if you have some experience or some knowledge then I do not think it matters but if you are new to the website world then maybe you should just let your host take care of it all for you.

I love the world we live in. For a website to propigate in two days is fantastic conpared to a few years ago. It honestly is not that much time.

Also, a lot of hosts are just registering your website with some random registrar. Doing both sometimes is convenitent because of billing everything together but it really does not help out timewise.

most of the time it only takes a few hours at the most to propagate. When I register names for customers they usually can see it right away unless they are in another country and then sometimes this take a couple of hours.

Unless you know the host, you generally don't want to register the domain with the same host. There are a lot of instances where hosts will hold a domain hostage because the customer wants to leave them. It does not look good on the hosts that do it, but it has happened and more than likely it will continue to happen.

The free domain name registration that comes with a web hosting plan is some kind of a trick to keep customers on a one-year lock in period. At least this has been the strategy of some disapproving hosting providers.

I have signed up for a plan that comes with a free domain. The company has no contract period for their hosting services. But after several months of hosting my site with them, I'd experienced some down time. I wanted to transfer my site to a new host, but then again my previous hosting company would charge some $20 for domain transfer. Now that's funny for a price of $20, I could already buy 3 new domain names. Looks like I have to stick up with my host for a full year.

So, I agree, getting your domain name registered under a different company is much recommended.

Precaution is better than cure.

Well, the starting line of my post means alot, not just in real life but in cyber-life as well.

Though hosts may give innumerable explanations as to why getting domain from them is easier or safe, but my outlook is little different. No, i am not biased for or against any one but i shall advise caution.

If you are able to register a domain through the host directly without getting host to do the honors or register it for you, it is fine. If your host from whom you wish to get domain is ICANN accredited, it is fine.

But if you pay the host and host registers domains for you, thats where i get skeptical. No, i don't mean they are not reliable but i would suggest not taking any chance or atleast go through Terms twice before going further.

There have been complaints when people have got domain from host for free or for cheap only to loose it after some time, just because they never knew domain was bound to their hosting plan duration or host played smart to retain master control preventing transfer of domains.

Afterall, you wouldn't wanna loose domain on which you have worked hard, made it worth it is now. So, registering a domain with company providing hosting is not bad but be sure that you do have controls and permissions to protect your domain or work on it freely. Additionally, it is always safe to go through terms before placing orders.

As with many situations, this depends. Some will offer you a free domain with a plan, and if you leave the plan, they charge you their standard rate for the domain. This doesn't mean they are cheating you, or that they have taken control of your domain. But it doesn't hurt to consult the terms and conditions of your provider.

In my case, I have always had the host I've used manage my domains as well. But there was nothing in their terms -- any of them -- that would have raised danger signals.

I've used pair.com, Yahoo!, GoDaddy and -- now -- DreamHost.
