[Thehostingnews] Google Powers New Green Search Engine, Earthle.com, for Energy Savings

San Diego, California - (The Hosting News) - June 4, 2007 - Search engine, Earthle.com, created as ''a black screen version of Google,'' has been developed to save energy, in which Internet users may save an estimated 750 Megawatt-hours of energy through its use.

Earthle uses Google search results, so when a user searches using Earthle, the same organic results are returned as if they had used Google. Using Earthle to search will not affect the results to which Google users are accustomed.

Support of the Earthle.com initiative includes the following:
1. Set your browser homepage to Earthle.com and use it when searching the internet.
2. Forward Earthle.com on to friends
3. Bookmark Earthle.com
4. Blog/write about Earthle to help spread the word
Mark Ontkush, a ''Green Computing'' expert, calculated the following:
- CTR Monitors use 74 watts to display and all white page, while an all black page only 59 watts a savings of 15 watts per page.
- Google gets about 200 Million queries a day
- Assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds which means Google is running for about 550,000 hours each day around the world.
- global savings of 8.3 Megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year.
- 25% of world monitors are CTR so a savings of 750 Megawatt-hours a Year.

750 Megawatt-Hours Can Power for an entire year:
77 North American Homes
150 European Homes
268 African Homes
536 Asian or South American Homes
3750 Homes in Afghanistan
6000 Televisions
800 Microwaves

In a January 2007 blog, Mr. Ontkush's computing calculations inspired the creation of Earthle. Information released by the company stated, ''Take at look at Google, who gets about 200 million queries a day. Let's assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds; that means Google is running for about 550,000 hours every day on some desktop. Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background will save a total of 15 (74-59) watts. That turns into a global savings of 8.3 Megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year. Now take into account that about 25 percent of the are CRTs, and at 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, that's $75,000, a goodly amount of energy and dollars for changing a few color codes.''
