Do think a coupon is better to use when having special offers or do you believe that they offer should show what the special is without using the coupon?

I would like to hear from other companies

Depending on your company, I think it would be better to have the special for everyone. I'm not a big fan of coupons.

Well companies actually use coupons for other purposes than trying to attract an increase in sales as a result of some kind of special. This is especially true for offline / print advertising. For example, we have been running a few full page advertisements in various magazines down under as part of the launch of our Australian services and have offered users 25% off their first month if they enter the coupon code. It is pretty certain that everyone who signs up as a result of that advertisement is going to enter the coupon... they would be crazy not to... so it allows us to track with a high degree of accuracy the return on that particular marketing campaign.

you are absolutely right about our way of keeping track of the return to where they're coming in from.

Hello,

Coupons can be a great resource when it comes to add tracking; however, there are software that allows you to do this without the coupons as well. What happens if a customer does not click that moment and comes back later expecting the coupon? What about if they forgot? Why not just use ad tracking software that is done by the company referred instead of putting more responsibility on the customers? The more steps or more thing a customer has to remember the less likely they are to buy.

You are pre-supposing that the coupon is being used soley as an online tool.
Coupons used in print media take on a whole different dynamic.

Thats why I use coupons mostly, it is to track where the buyer has come from.

We kind-of do the same but for us it's mostly so we can tell which promotion or special caught someone's attention. Just makes it easy to track, we don't do them often but when we do, that's the primary reason for different coupons.
We always indicate what the coupon is good for and for how long AND if we run some type discount of significance we offer current customers a similar or equal deal (just an example-not in use: if we were offering a free month for "whatever" we would simultaneously offer existing customers 1 or 2 free months for a referral who signed up or such)

Currently we are using both ad tracking and coupons. Together you will always know where your customers are coming from.

We only use our coupons in advertising specials, not on our website. Customers coming directly to our website won't see or know about them. If there is a discount, they will get it automatically at checkout without a coupon.

I know that by posting on message boards, I get traffic from the ads and from my signature, and the tracking software can only tell me so much... the coupon and a "where did you find us?" on checkout helps to pinpoint it excatly, especially when you can't place a tracking code on all your links. And its not fun to weed through pages of http://someforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30132 to find out excatly where they came from... unless your in one of those moods :smash:. It just depends on your time I guess :).

We use coupons in a number of ways.

The first is as above, so that we can track both on and offline promotions to see where our marketing needsto be tightened or in some cases scrapped and moved to another area.

We also use them for the occassional special offer and also use them as incentives for existing clients so that they can claim a discount etc for refering new business to us.
