Anyone here been in the army? If you did what did you think of it?

I'm about to sign up for what's called HV-02. It's Norway's home guard. You can sign up when you're 16 and they'll give you training after school so that you can combine the two. about 6-8 times a year you go and do field training in the forest etc. Also because the soldiers will only be 16 they only carry guns that are not loaded. They are never called out on operational duty and can quit at any time. You learn all the other stuff though like navigation using GPS and the good old map and compass, being a medic, field communication, survival training etc. I just hope I get inn. Not everyone does. I think you have to do an interview so they can get rid of all the gun hoes etc so that should be no problem. But there's also a limited amount of people who can get inn. 1500 is the number at the moment.

This will also help if I decide to go for an army carer, as I get extra points meaning earlier promotions.

I wouldn't personally like to join the army, not my type of thing.. but if its what you like, who am I to say nething? :)

I was considering joining the Irish Army for years but once you join you have to stay for a certain length of time, and you have to stay in the one area when in the army.

Thats the main thing that put me off, I dont like to stay in the one place and I like to travel every now and again, I wouldnt be able to do that much if I was in the army, and the Irish army doesnt go to many other countries as its defense only.

I think it would be good if it wasnt so strict for placement

Actually I was going to enroll in the army but I started my own business and have no time. Though if my country ever needed me I'd be signing up.

My countries army is mostly for defense but we have peacekeepers in more thank 15 countries at the moment. We also do exchanges with the american army. The american Navy SEAL's even come to Tromsø here in Norway once a year to train with the Norwegian equivalent of the Navy SEAL's called Marine Jegerne (Marine Hunters).
