Testing your compitiors

Does anyone else do this? I have been messing around with some random VPS places lately (those that sell direct to public, and those who allow resellers) just to see how the rest of the people are shipping and shaping up. I have ran into a couple that are not what I am looking for, but some of the smaller places I am surprised (and happy) with the level of support they give "their clients" aka me.

Er, yes actually. I was kinda getting at this, or getting round to it when I made my thread recently about observing host uptime. I have messed around as you said, seen how others do it. I'm not sure how ethical it is, which is why I didn't directly come out and say it...

Nope. This is something that I don't do, but we do see others doing it to us ;) We're too busy usually to review how competition is doing. Our focus is to maintain that we're BETTER than the competition and constantly improve upon things that can lead to a better user experience. Down time by our employees is spent making articles or knowledgebase content rather than reviewing the competition.

with so many web hosting companies, I gave up on that idea and focus more on my company like handonhosting does. Don't get me wrong, I still like to look at my competitors and see what they are offering and so forth. I only do that once in a blue moon though.

I agree with handsonhosting, we should be better. But... aren't ya a little curious??? Maybe to find out what others are offering and how you can beat them or be better?

It's not entirely clear to me whether you mean that you look around on competitors' web pages or that you actually order service from them, but I don't see an ethical problem either way as long as you are not going out of your way to clog up their support system or whatever.

Well ultimately I know that I am very much a beginner at all of this. If things take off, sure I'll have to stop looking at others. But in the meantime if I can find the better features from a bunch of places and bring them all together, wouldn't that give me an edge?

That's how I view it.

I don't see anything unethical about what you are doing. As long as they are getting paid and you are not deliberately sabotaging in some way, what's the problem? You may see things that other companies do that you can do better this way and improve your own services.

I would not "test" my competitors. The way they run their business is up to them. They have their niches, I have mine. But I have hosted with competitors in the past.

That is about what I was getting at, those lately I have tested out a couple of other VPS services just to see how things compared. I still like mine more though. :)

No I was not, it was in regards to actually tested what they sell, not DDOS them to death. :D
