:: Friday June 29. 1.25am. The London Ambulance Service is called to the Tiger Tiger nightclub in central London to treat a person who had been injured in a fall. Arriving at Haymarket in the West End, ambulance crews notice smoke coming from a Mercedes parked in front of the nightclub and alert the police.
:: 2am. A police bomb squad arrives and discovers the car is packed with petrol, nails, gas cylinders and a detonator. The squad then defuses the explosives.
:: 2.30am. A second Mercedes parked illegally in Cockspur Street, which runs between Haymarket and Trafalgar Square, is ticketed, then towed away an hour later to a car compound off Park Lane.
:: 1.40pm. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith says the UK is "currently facing the most serious and sustained threat". She makes the announcement after chairing a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee.
