Terms Bandwidth & Data Transfer?

Hi,

Do you guys understand the difference between Bandwidth and Data Transfer?

The reason to open such thread is that many service providers create misleading offerings in which they use the terms "bandwidth", instead of using "data transfer". Anyway, please go back to the question :)

PS: This is a question to consumers, not to fellow web hosting service providers, but anyone is welcome to join? I'm not offering the answer to the question as this is a thread that has been created to provoke a discussion.

Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred at one time.
Data transfer is the actual amount of data transferred.

Maybe, Bandwidth became synonymous with Data Transfer because of Marketing Strategies and Gimmicks....

Data Tranfer:
When a server transfers the total amount of bytes of data to a particular website in a specific time, it is called as data transfer. The data transferred across a server is mostly measured by the hosts over a 30 day or one month period.
For example, data transfer is the number of cars allowed to pass through a tunnel in a specific time span.

Bandwidth:
The maximum amount of data that can be transferred in a specific time span is called as bandwidth. It was first used in analog tools and devices for submitting acoustic signals, radio transmission signals and other types of signals.
For example, bandwidth is the tunnel. So the bigger the tunnel size the more number of cars will pass through it.

As a provider for Colocation and as an ISP we try and spell this out very clearly for our customers . Since we are an ISP and we own our entire fiber optic network from Cermak in Chicago to the Data center in Bettendorf as well as to Des moines and Omaha we do not charge or place any data caps like our other competitors do.

When we offer 100Mbps internet the client is able to get 100Mbps Up and Down 24/7/365 with no Data Cap (Data Transfer Limit)

Bandwidth = Speed
Data Cap / Data Transfer Limit = Amount of Data you can send in a given time frame

Data Transfer
Data transfer refers to the total number of bytes of data a server transfers to a particular website in a given period of time. Most hosting plans measure the amount of data transferred across a server over a 30 day or one month period.

Bandwidth
Bandwidth is a term that precedes servers, computers and all digital technologies. In computing, bandwidth refers to the maximum amount of data that is transferable in a given period of time.

Generally, web hosts talk about bandwidth and data transfer as the same entity. However, the difference between bandwidth and data transfer. Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred at one time. Data transfer is the actual amount of data transferred.

Bandwidth = amount of data that can be transferred at a certain amount of time.
Data transfer = actual amount of data transferred.
E.g.
Bandwidth 1Gbps means the server can transfer a maximum of 1Gb data per second.
When you upload a photo with a file size of 100KB to your website, the data transfer will be 100KB.
