Suggestion: Buy all different tld domains

Hey all :)

I was speaking to one of my clients who owns an online property advertising website. He said that someone had recently registered the .net version of his .com domain and had started a scam.

I would suggest that you at least register the .com, .net and .org which I have now done.

Most companies should own at least the .com and .net of the domain. Not doing so can result in bad things. It also makes it easier for potential customers who know the name of your company but cant remember if its .com .net .org etc.

Its wise to buy all TLDs for any site if you think its going to be popular.
Even just the .com and .net can really help.
A lot of people may link to the wrong ext for a domain and a lot of people also enter the wrong ext in the browser which would mean you lose a lot of traffic.
Someone could even create a similar site on your other TLD ext and people wouldn't notice they are on the wrong site.
That can be a big problem if its a business site you are running

Well, I have dot com and dot net of webmaxhosting.com and webmaxhosting.net and I also have moon-hosting.com for main site and moon-hosting.net for dns.

What about country specific domains such as .co.uk, .ca, .de, .be, .jp, etc. etc.? ;)
heh. I actually thought about that, however it was such as a hassle for .fr and .be and .de that I just didn't bother. Firstly you need to have an office in each country, and even though I do in France (although not in Germany or Belgium)... the paperwork was just too much to bother with.

However I don't think there is a point in registering the .org version. Why? Not many people go to websites that are .org, or at least I don't know of anyone, and mainly what profit making company wants their clients to go to theirsite.org ??

I can fully understand .com and .net, even: .us, .cc, .tm, .com.cn, .net.cn, .info, .biz, .ws, .nu, .tv, and .bz I can understand. But .org I think is a bit OTT.

Yeah I am sorry I never did buy all 3 TLDs.. I have CaperTech.net but someone else has registered CaperTech.com.. I have CaperTech.ca however.. would be nice to have the .com..

Maybe you could buy it off them?

I missed out once on a .com and .net of one of my domain names. I ended up waiting 2 years and then had to pay $60 for the .com and the .net was just registered for the regular price though.

I'm after my .com. All there is at the moment is a parking page with a counter. Been there a long time. Doesn't expire for quite a while.

Matt

Question is how far do you go? Do I register .co.uk/.me.uk/.org.uk etc? Com/net/org are obvious but you could easily end up spending $1000's to grab all the domains

Good point there Vaserv. I tend to grab .com's .co.uk's .net's. .Com is always my priority and .co.uk next. .Net is just taken if it's available.

I have to agree with all of you on this. It is best to grab .com, .com.uk, and .net first without a doubt. That way you don't have to worry about scams or other customers forgetting your url.

Also, try to get smaller urls of your main url. For example, for hadleyhost.net/com you can also get hhhost.com/net. Not the best example but hopefully you get what I mean.

Just try not to go to insane now. The main purpose is not to waste $1000 dollars on just domain names.
