Sued for slander?

I was informed by another webhosting company that I will be sued if I continue to talk slander about the company. The only thing I recall saying was a semi-negative comment to the person who owns this company.
I'll try to hold back my laughs, incase he can really do this, but this is what he sent me.


Hello -----, I am contacting you on the Behalf of what I have heard about -------(his hosting company), If I find anymore Talk or Down talking about this site i will take action which in forth will have your Site closed down. i do not mess around with Hosting companys that are vertified In -------- Database. Thanks,

You can be sued by anyone at any time. It doesn't mean they will win, but it does mean you will have to spend money to defend yourself.
 
Keep in mind that it also means that they will need to contact and pay an attorney, who will probably find it just as laughable.

Most attorneys will not take a case that they know they'll lose.

I would not worry about him.

In fact, I'm just the person he would hate, as I would beg, and try to convince him to do it lol
 
I know someone that threatens to sue people all the time. 99.9% of the time I dont think he is serious, but depending on how the threat is worded it can go a long way towards making someone stop whatever it is they are doing. A well worded, properly punctuated cease and desist letter can work wonders. A poorly written, error ridden letter is always good for a laugh.

If that e-mail you pasted is word for word what the guy said, I would take it as a joke more than a threat.

I am no legal expert ... but can a person be sued for slander if what they say is true???

If what you said is true & accurate .... and you have the proof that it is true and accurate ... I think I would be like Mark and send him an email telling him to "bring it on". Then you counter sue for legal & court costs and tag on a bit more $$$ for "mischievous intent" or something.

When I was working the company I ran got sued once. It was glorious. He did not do his homework before he sued. He had a "storefront lawyer" ... our company lawyers had 6 floors in one of the most prestigious office towers in Toronto. We did not counter sue .... but the judge was so ticked off at the guy & his lawyer not only for bringing the suit but also lying in order to confiscate some of our company records ... that he denied his claim, ordered him to pay all our legal costs & court costs as well as an additional $100K just for the inconvenience he caused us. Believe it or not ... we got our money ... and he went bankrupt within 3 months afterwards. Like I said ... it was glorious. Served the guy right.

Seems like a "letter" a 13-year old would write. I would have disregarded it.
 
Yeah, I did some research and the company owner was in his teenage years. I can't help but laugh

The common thread of all of the above is that you would have to be knowingly making false statements about someone. If you truly believe what you are saying/writing, you are not culpable in the eyes of the law.

Anyone who threatens to sue someone on the internet is an idiot. Unless you plan to take the case to Peoples Court OR they live in your state, you practically have no way to do it without costing you more money than its worth.

In my opinion, if someone is going to talk bad about you on a hosting forum, suck it up. If it isn't true, the other members will see it for what it is and roll their eyes. If it is true, then they shouldn't have given reason for someone to post bad about them. Just my 2 cents.
 
Vito pointed out the kicker here certainly, but with the overall lack of grammar and improper usage of words I'd say a 14-15 year-old wrote it. I wouldn't be worried about it at all.
 
I had it happen to me once. My resonse was, hurry up and sue me, here's my Lawyers address & phone number... I'll be eagerly awaiting your lawsuit and encourage you to follow through and hope this isn't some sort of bluff.

The guy went away.
