Such Simple Stuff

I had an interesting situation come up today. I've been doing a little IT work for someone, who recently freaked when they received two, not one hosting bill. He'd moved his website but not his email hosting, and oddly expected to get only one bill.

Anyway his webhosting company would host email for free so he chose to move them, then freaked when his email stopped coming through, even though the company tried to talk him through the simple steps to changing his Outlook express to the new server.

So he calls me, a long way away. Still doesn't get it. Half and hour later he asks the hosting company to switch it back. He didn't pay his bill-in a week his email will be cut off anyway.

So frustrating! How do people who can't follow such simple instructions still walk about and not fall into holes or something?!

It is interesting to me, how people can't follow simple instructions. How can it be so hard to change the Outlook express?!

Maybe the people who are like that have guides who keep them from the holes? ;)

What percentage of support calls relate to email problems? I suspect it's pretty high across the board.

Yes I would too and the sad thing is like AbbyRose said, it is such a very simple thing. If you will walk through it once it usually is a breeze after that. Why make it so difficult?

I think it's less of an issue of people being unable to follow the instructions and more an issue of the fear of change. People are creatures of habit, many of them having developed there habits before the advent of the internet. It certainly takes some easing into if you haven't grown up with it. Most of the time, issues like this can be solved by an understanding tech that is willing to do a bit of hand holding.
